648 Reasons Theo Epstein Wasn't a Great Red Sox GM

    2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.

162 games in a MLB season, 4 seasons of Theo Epstein full control of Sox roster and player personnel decisions.

We saw the results in September.

Save the 2004/2007 bromance, Larry Lucchino was still in charge in 2004, and Lucchino stepped in again after Theo's 2005 debacle to get Lowell/Beckett here to rekindle the Sox title run.

Of course, just like he did in 2005, Epstein tinkered with the 2007 Red Sox team, shipping Manny to LA to bat .500 and carry the Dodgers to the playoffs while the Red Sox went on to lose the ALCS with anemic pitching and even more anemic hitting thanks to Epstein choosing ego and Buchholz over a 2008 World Series title.

More Theo Epstein myth busting from Boston Globe's Tony Mazz:

"During his time in Boston, Cherington now has had the luxury of working for two general managers – three if you count interim GM Mike Port in 2002 – who have built the Red Sox into what they are"

Mazz goes on to talk about how Duquette & Co built the team that turned it around and reversed the curse.

    Ouch.

As long as those GMs had the 2007 World Series Champions to work with during that downhill tank job Theo Epstein led the Red Sox on once he got full control.

What? The truth that you're obsessed with Theo? I think that's undeniable. I just went and looked at your posting history, and every post that wasn't blank was bashing Theo. Theo's gone. Either get over it, or start posting on a Cubs' forum.

Of course, because every baseball fan knows that once you win a WS Championship with one team you should win 5 years in a row.....there is no such thing as injuries....players getting old.....other teams improving......and your theory is proved by the fact that since Theo has been GM, every team that has won the WS has gone on to win.......uhhh.....nevermind.

Because every baseball fan knows that you don't take a team that DOMINATED the 2007 season, that was being called a baseball dynasty heading into the 2008 season and pick it apart from the inside out with NO PLAN to replace its power hitter or bolster the starting rotation.

Players getting old? Then why did Theo bring them back year after year after year? (See Varitek and Wakefield)

Other teams improving? Oh you mean by adding Mark Teixiera, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and a bevy of other players the Red Sox COULD HAVE HAD if not for Theo?

My theory is proven by history.
Theo QUIT on the Sox after the 05 season demanding full control of player personnel without Lucchino's "interference".  John Henry gave it to him and VOILA, the Red Sox were off on Theo's bridge while Sox fans were trying to jump off of it.

The Red Sox had a team entering the 2008 season capable of winning TWO more World Series titles if we'd JUST made a move on Halladay, or Johan Santana or gotten the Teixiera deal done. Instead we ended up with Theo Epstein spending more time playing guitar hero in Vegas hotel rooms with Gammons than making deals the Sox needed done.

i didnt realize you were part of the negotiating team for Halladay, Santana and Texeira.....because from non-inside information, I had thought it was clear that texeira never wanted to play for the Sox....but I guess maybe you should call him and remind him. As for Santana....considering the weak package they took from the Mets for him, it always seemed pretty clear that the Twins wanted to get him out of the league.,,,but again, I am sure right before they traded him to the Mets, they offered him to the Sox for a bag of balls and some Fenway Franks and that idiot Theo tried to negotitate them down further.

He gave up on his Yazzer and Babe routines and reverted back to Law. He will be refining his Crawford bashing routine over the winter. Poor Crawford will be like a rabbit running across a rifle range next year.

Sorry Jim, didn't mean to make you pull your nose off your Theo Epstein poster to comment. If you had your face any farther up Theo's backside you could remove Epstein's tonsils with your eyelashes.

And feel free to rethink "Pinochio", Mr. Alphabet.
