    A couple Interesting VTek Observations

A lot of talk has been generated over VTek's value as a "game caller" or in the intangibles related to "catcher relevance". We all know VTek has done better offensively this year than his 2010 season (2008 & 2009 as well).

Playing about 40% of the time has helped, and I don't think anyone here thinks Vtek could put up the offensive numbers he has so far this year had he played 66-75% of the innings.

That being said, here's a look at a couple of VTek's offensive numbers and how they relate to others on our team and MLB as a whole:

    Slugging %:
    Sox:
    Papi   .590
    AGon .557
    Ellsb  .533
    Redd .495
    Salty .471
    Youk .467
    Pede .458
    VTek .451
    League: .405

Only 6 catchers out of the top 30 in MLB have a higher Slugging % than VTek
Napoli (who is a part-time catcher), Avila, MCCann, Salty, Montero, and Hundley.

    OPS:
    Papi   .994
    AGon  .964
    Ellsb   .909
    Pede  .842
    Youk  .842
    Redd  .837
    Salty  .775
    VTek  .758
    Scut  .750
    League Avg: .727

Only 11 catchers in MLB (out of the top 30 by PAs) have a higher OPS than VTek.

As a team, the Sox catchers have the 5th best Slug% (.456)out of 30 teams.
The Sox catchers are 5th in MLB is OPS at .765.

Last year, the Sox catchers combined for a .777 OPS (fangraphs), which also was 5th best in MLB.

I liked Tek's game calling, tonight.

What are the Sox catchers ranked in defensive categories?

I admit not focusing on Tek's offense, but those are interesting comparisons, Moon. Nice work.

Soft, seeing that Miller threw his 2 best outings with Salty, you can plainly see that Tek should stop catching Miller. I said this going back to ChiTown. Salty catches Miller, Tek catches Wakefield, and all of this nonsense stops, even your clown posting. Well, no your clown posting would continue ad nauseum, so never mind.

Wastefield support is drivel. Tek should stop catching on Thursdays.

Re: A couple Interesting VTek Observations

I am not trying to argue that Vtek is a great offensive weapon, however, I get the feeling many fans expect a catcher to hit like a 1Bman. It rarely happens in MLB, and when it does, the catcher sometimes is not really a FT catcher (see Napoli and VMart).

In general, catchers in MLB are very weak hitters. The median MLB team catcher numbers are as follows:

    BA: .250    (9 teams are under .237)
    OBP .315   (6 teams are under .300)
    SLG  .380  (9 teams are under .362)
    OPS .695  (10 teams are under .672)

    VTek is .233/.307/.451/.758

Catchers are not easy to find cheap.

What ? You mean guys like Fisk, Bench, Carter, Berra and Campanella don't grow on trees ?

LOVE the Captain, but for accomplishments and leadership in past. One more year in part-time role, maybe. But would love to see Ryan Lavarnway catch a half-dozen games this month.

I have thought of Iggy'ing crazedwhateverhisnameis for his lies and cover-up antics. I don't see it going beyond 2. Someday, I might uniggy the clown for a laugh or two.

I do find things more peaceful and less political. I still catch glimpses of his "drivel" when others respond to him.

Speaking of the silly clown: last year, suddenly HR% was the most important stat since it was the only stat that BHall beat Jed by (and it was by an eyelash in this one category).

    Let's have a looksee:

    1 HR per PA:
    Papi   18.1
    VTek  20.3
    Salty  22.6
    Ellsb  25.3
    AGon 26.9
    Youk  29.5
    Pede 35.6

    Of note:
    Lowrie 76.0 (2011)
    Lowrie 21.9 (2010)
    BHall   99.9 (2011)
    BHall   21.2 (2010)

    VMart 51.6 (2011)
    VMart 24.7 (2010)

Watch it happen.  Both Wakefield and Varitek will be back in 2012.

It still amazes me how two of the most talked about issues about the Sox this season are about our 6/7th starter (Wake) and our back-up catcher (VTek).

Wake has not done well this year, but he carried us for a while and is still better than most other team's #5-7 starters, and better than Lackey and Miller so far this year.

VTek wins. The team wins when VTek catches. He can't throw well, and he's not the greatest defensive catcher either, however, in limited action (more than most back-up catchers), Wake has an OPS that rates in the top 10...among starters!!!!! He's the back-up, guys!

This team's biggest weaknesses are not 6/7 starter and #2 catcher.

Anyone believe Wastefield carried the team for a second?

Tek is the best backup catcher in BB.  He'd automatically get a job.

Did you know that he's still good enough to qualify as a Type B FA?

    BINGO!

Also, from May 22nd (when Wake joined the rotation) to August 8th, the Sox went 10-4. Wake had more IP and more GS than any other starter in that stretch. He saved the pen. The team has gone 14-5 after his game started, thanks in part to having a rested pen.

We were a half game behind when Wake joined the rotation, and we were up 1.5 on Aug 8th. Had the Sox had a "normal" 6th starter in that stretch, maybe they'd have gone 7-7 at best. If that had happened, this TB series would mean a lot more.

Since then, he has struggled mightily. No doubt.

Re: A couple Interesting VTek Observations

Wakefield makes 5 million a year. That is 5 million toward a pitcher or player who can help the team as well as the 15 million on Drew that slides off the books. Think about this please with the supposed cash flow problem we are having next year.
