Wonder if Floyd on a 1 year deal would cost much. they have Tyler Flowers behind the plate and like him, so Im not sure what they would want in return.

From today's piece by Boston Globe columnist Nick Cafardo:

Cherington also said he'd like to add a lefthanded hitter or two who can play first base and the outfield. One name that's come up is Seattle's Mike Carp.

    http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/2012/12/07/red-sox-like-their-moves-but-not-everyone-does/GrOCNpLLHI3pf7MXJt9OAI/story.html

Would three years of Daniel Bard with a projected 2013 salary of $1.6 million be too much or too little for four years of Mike Carp, the American League Rookie of the Month when he drove in 25 runs in August 2011?

How about four years of Carp, with a career OPS+ of 110 in 608 plate appearances, for five years of Ryan Kalish, with a career OPS+ of 72 in 282 plate appearances? Too much or too little?

Here are the minor league slash lines for Carp and Kalish (who is 21 months younger than Carp):

    MC 3552 PA, .276/.366/.465/.832

    RK 1844 PA, .279/.366/.429/.794

The Sox would never consider trading an arm like Bard's for a backup infielder/outfielder and they are a little higher on Kalish than most, whether right or wrong.  It would be easier to trade a "B" prospect for a backup lefty first baseman/outfielder type or sign a free agent, so I guess the answer would be "too much."

    Fair enough.

I doubt the Mariners would want to pay a $1.6 million salary to Daniel Bard after the average velocity of the righthander's fastball went from 97.3 mph in 2009, to 97.9 mph in 2010, to 97.3 mph in 2011, to 93.1 in 2012. Seattle has three righthanded relievers -- Carter Capps, Tom Wilhelmsen and Stephen Pryor, all at the league minimum salary -- who last season had average fastballs of 98.3, 96.3 and 96.3, respectively, with ERAs of 3.96, 2.50 and 3.91.

I suspect the Mariners would be reluctant to part with last year's Opening Day leftfielder for a backup outfielder in Ryan Kalish.

My guess (not my choice) is we get Swisher and skimp on pitching.

Swish makes us a stronger lineup--not stronger than Stanton in RF but definitely more flexible with his ability to play all 3 OF plus 1 b. If the Sox can't outpitch the opposition perhaps  they can score more runs.

While all true, just because someone makes us stronger, doesn't mean he is worth signing or is better than other alternatives.

Around 40 million a year for 3 starters is not "sikimping on pitching".

It is when looking at the relationship to what was spent on SV, JG and DR.

About $21M a year for 3 platoon players.

I think Ben gets a 3/4 slot pitcher (yuck!), signs Swisher, and trades Salty (allowing Swish to play 1B when Naps catches).

This would not be enough to make us a strong WS contender, but we could make a run at the playoffs.

What I don't like about it is that most of these guys are old and likely to decline, so I don't see us getting better in 2014, unless a rookie pulls a Rice or Lynn on us.

    Trade or FA signings:

By going with the FA you can casually control the 40 man roster. Remove then add.

With the trade unless you straight up trade you may have more of a balancing act to contend with.

If they don't sign Nap they will keep Salty and send RyLav to AAA--that's okay. I see Swish on their radar right now if they know Nap is out--Swish will want more $ and another year. I would sign Swish as the 1b or go with the platoon of Pena and Gomez( I like that). OR

TRADE for Stanton, JUp or Trumbo or Alex Gordon to play RF.

    1b--Pena/Gomez

    2b--Pedroia

    SS-Iggy/Ciriaco

    3b-WMB

    LF-Gomes/Nava/Sands

    CF-Ells

    RF-Swish/Stanton/JUp/A.Gordon/Kalish/Brentz/C.Ross

    C--D.Ross/ Salty

Once the Sox sign Nap and Swish(?) and possibly Soriano as closer I think you will see them active in the trade market.

Ells, Salty, Bailey, Lester and possibly Iggy and Melancon.

Moon's  long talked about deal for Gavin Floyd will finally be made.

Hey Mad! Trumbo can play first is the Napoli deal does not pan out, or if Napoli winds up only playing 100 games or so due to injuries. I think Trumbo was moved only because of Pujols.

I still think Kendrys Morales is the odd man out. I would like to see the Red Sox deal Morales or Aceves plus a lower prospect for Morales. In the meantime, we have alot of catchers.

Hey 808---Kendrys is good but I think he is one year rental. If the Sox could do a sign and trade I think it would be a very good deal. Another switch hitter, sign Swish, you've got ShaVic and Salty  to bat from either side of the plate; four of 9 batters is a nice luxury.

Trumbo is a guy with a swing made for Fenway. I would trade some suspects for him.

Since Kendrys is off the table on his way to the Mariners how about exploring what the Pirates might have. Perhaps a Blockbuster:

Joel Hanrahan, Wandy Rodriguez or James McDonald, and Garrett Jones for

Lester, Bailey or Bard, Kalish and Ranaudo or Pimental or Britton.

I think we match up well with the Pirates. Both McDonald and Rodriguez eat a lot of innings, especially Rodriquez.

We have too many medical concerns to risk signing Jerrgens who is a free agent. There must be a reason his name hasn't been mentioned. I think if you signed him to a minor league contract for $2 M loaded with incentives with an invite to ST.

56---I'm pretty sure he is.  Maybe there is a clause in there--I don't know... His name is listed. I just went to the Braves roster and he wasn't listed---it did however say on Google he was Arb eligible for the second time. He's not listed on the Braves 40 man roster either.
