Yes he is hurting.  Remember he sat out one game due stiff neck as well he claimed that his right shoulder is bothering him.  Wondering if that right shoulder is the same one that he had off season surgery.

His surgically repaired shoulder is bothering him and zapped his power to the opposite field.

Reports are his surgically repaired right shoulder has been bothering him since mid August...Hopefully with a full offseason to strenghten and rehab he'll be much stronger next year (or they'll need to rest him more often)....

Gonzalez and the Home Run hitting Contest

My question is that with Adrian Gonzalez had surgery on his shoulder in the off season. How could the Red Sox Management and medical Staff allow this valuable player to take part in the Home Run hitting contest where he could potentially hurt the shoulder as well as the team

The Yankees play that game where their stars have mysterious injuries right b4 the break like Rivera for 2 years now, Jeter this year, and AROD. They are smart in doing that.

I agree, Sox should have stopped Agon from participating in the HR derby.

But with Youk out, he gets nothing to hit either.  Even RH pitchers know the Sox power is from the left side, they setup their game plan accordingly.   Much harder if you have a RH power bat, which the Sox lack big time.  Pitchers will make a mistake going back on forth across the plate to face power RH then LH batters.  Not so much when all the power if from one side.  Big mistake by Theo if there was one IMHO ... not getting a power RH hitter.

With the exception of Ells and Pap, who on the team hasn't disappeared in September?

The gaudy numbers some of the Red Sox hitters earn at the Fens may be distorting.  Both Ortiz and Gonzalez have many "doubles" off the wall that are routine outs elsewhere.  Ortiz had two such balls the other night at Yankee Stadium and another one at Canmden yards last night.  Does anyone know the home/away Ba breakdopwn for the Red Sox in general and those two hitters in particular?

Gonzalez was pretty even and actually a little better on the road in many stats:
    Home:  .347 Avg/.413 OBP/.516 Slugging/.929 OPS, 109 H, 19 2B, 2 3B, 10 HR
    Away:  .328/.400/.582/.982, 102 H, 26 2B, 1 3B, 17 HR

    Ortiz much better at home:
    Home:  .328/.436/.528/1.024, 93H, 26 2B, 1 3B, 13 HR
    Away:  .269/.351/.522/.874, 66 H, 14 2B, 0 3B, 16 HR

I'm surprised more hasn't been made of the obvious mistake it was to allow Agone to participate in the HR derby.  Now his bad shoulder is acting up, well maybe Agone and management should have told him and Papi who drafted him, that it would be a good idea if Agone sat that one out.  In the past guys who have gone deep in the HR derby have struggled in the second half and this year I remember some former player saying that the day after the HR derby was the "most sore I have ever been in my life".

In the second half Agone has been a slower version of Wade Boggs.  No worries though, he is only due 20 million for the next 7 years.

Gonzo leads the league in hits (211) is 3rd in BA (.338) and 2nd in RBIs (117)
    and his slugging% is .549.

    Pujols .548
    Fielder .547
    Agon   .549

Just to remind all you crumb-bums making comments, we have one of the best players in the game on our team, you should be grateful.   And he is a better defensive 1st baseman than Fielder or Pujols.  Watch how much those lard_butts get, then complain some more about our All-Star.

Perhaps participating in the HE Derby had nothing to do with the injury. We are just fans and not medical doctors.

In August his slg % was 478 and in Sept it is 530.  He has fallen off significantly since the All-star break.  The hits are great but he is paid to produce runs, not single with 2 out and no one on.  He had 13 RBI in August, compared to 25 and 31 and May and June.

not sure if it was the home run derby that hurt gonzalez, the next day he took Cliff Lee deep in the all star game

A fair point.  I just think if he is now suffering from fatigue in his surgically repaired shoulder, it may have been wise to have him sit out the most exhausting activity of the season for a hitter.

Yep and the stock market's performance over the years has been shown to be highly correlated with the deposit of sediment in the Mississippi in the delta at New Orleans.

Konerko, Abreu, and Wright all had big first halfs and lousy second halfs in years where they went far in the HR derby.  Add Agone to the list.  I'm sure it is just a coincidence.

Yeah Gonz had a less than great September. But his May, June and July were phenomenal - He batted .341 in May, .404 in June, and .373 in July.  Without Gonzo, the Sox wouldn't have collapsed in September because they wouldn't have been in first place.
