A modest proposal: Tek for special assistant to Gary Tuck

Gary Tuck seems to be away from camp due to surgery, and Bobby V. says that Tuck should take his time.

Agreed. Tuck is obliged to himself and his family to get well.

But while Tuck is out, why not appoint Jason Veritek as a special assistant who would take some of Tuck's coaching and teaching duties.

No, he would no longer be Captain Tek - he would need to relinquish the 'C.'

Which is not a bad idea. As others have said here in other threads, the 'C' should be given a rest.

But what the hey - it's worth a shot.

And after Tuck returns, Tek could stay with the franchise as a roving catching instructor.  Stake out some time in the new facilities. Coach Salty and Lava some more.

    Or not.

    Just a thought.

There's probably a reason why Jason Varitek was not asked back.

Can "we" not let it rest at that?

Absolutely. Great idea. If they're not going to give him a contract, I would hate to see all that valuable knowledge just go to waste. He has been probably one of the most well-prepared catchers in baseball. And he was the catcher for four no-hitters. A record in baseball.

This has been my opinion all along.  I do think that he needs some seperation first.  This year may be to soon.  My guess that the itch to play will be there for a long time but he has to be ready to just coach.  Time will tell.

Tek can be a roving instructor in the minors, that tis all for now.

I would rather see Tek take a year or two off, come to grips with the fact that his playing days are over. Then maybe, if the Red Sox and Tek want to slot him in as a Catching Instructor, Minor League Coach fine. IMO he would need to start at the bottom of the Minor Leagues and move up on the basis of success....or not, just like any other Coaching Staff personnel.

I don't know how long Tuck is expected to be out, but it seems to be that Varitek would be a perfect fill in.  He can mentor the young catchers, work with the pitchers, continue his own workouts, and if one either Salty or Shoppach get injured during ST, Varitek will already be there.

    Jason Varitek? Coach?

His ego is too big to fit the part of a coach.

Will he then have a BIG "C" on his shirt?

Don't respond to this the former Babe. You will be wasting your time. Ignore him.
