We are piecing together a new team with all these moves, and a new team culture. Are these guys winners? One would think maybe.
Letting Melancon go cheap might just be another way of cleaning house. Got to give Cherington credit for at least trying to change team culture. If a guy just isn't a positive influence in the clubhouse that can be reason enough to move him. Are you listening Aceves? How the heck are you still on the roster? They have got to be trying to move him, with all these reliever deals in place.
It seems to me that the Victorino move was at least in part a culture move. That guy has energy and is a positive spirit. Let's hope he can still play also. That's a lot of moolah for a culture move but if we drill down this if a guy who can maybe move Ellsbury to the 3 slot, at least part of the time, where possibly he is a better fit for this team going forward. Victorino is a great base runner who can put up decent doubles and triples power in Fenway I would think. And might be least a terrific platoon player near the top of the lineup. No way he looks to be worth $39 mil but at least he is a positive guy and an exciting player to watch. Somewhat overpaid but he should help us nonetheless.
Some of what just happened with Hanrahanwas simply dealing with the lack of roster spots on the 40 man. We had an excess of players and we tried to upgrade the quality of those remaining.
