Why not talk about his annual salary instead of the amount for the length of the contract unless you are making the assumption that your crystal ball has him being a bust for seven years. Why are so many posters making that long term assumption?

That's all they do.  If you are a bust in year one, you are a bust.  Twice JD Drew had one of the ten best OPS in the AL, but alot of his critics ignore that because he was bad the first season...

It just staggers the mind that a supposed Red Sox fan wants to assume that if a new player has a bad first year that he will repeat it for six more years. Are they really Sox fans or are they pretending?

How has JD Drew played the last two seasons?  He has been Lackey bad.

Come to think of it, where is JD Drew? I heard that he hurt his back, neck, shoulder, head, thigh and foot bending over to tie his shoes?

Has he been out three months with a broken finger?  Don't you just tape fingers together when they are broken?

That being said, I still hope Crawford comes around in 2012.

John Lackey - I have no such hope.

Re: ALL THIS, FOR 180MIL...... NO WONDER,

Again, people are abusing the OPS stat which is meant to simplify deeper stats for a layman.

The fact of the matter is, and we've been through this lots of times already, OPS is an aggregate of aggregates and averages; they speak nothing about consistency or, in some cases actual production not to mention clutch hitting.

In DJ Drew's case let's review briefly:

2007 - Total Bust (Note to the pink hats:  One Hit does not make a season, even a GS...Remember, they won 11-2 w/ the greatest post season pitcher in history on the hill)

2008 - Great First Half, Poor Second Half, Nice Post Season....this resulted in a high OPS but that was due to the strong first half and predominantly a lot of walks.  For all you non-little leaguers out there, a walk is most often not as good as a hit.  RBI < 70...Overall, a pretty decent season...his best in a Sox uni IMO

2009 - Poor First Half of the season, Strong Septmeber, Poor Clutch Hitting......but the strong September coupled with a over 20 HR's in a relatively low # of PA's resulting in a high OPS.....RBI < 70...Not a total bust but nothing to get excited about

    2010 - Another total bust

2011 - His worst season in a Sox uni yet

In short, the OPS stat is meant for the casual baseball fan who in addition, does not fully grasp even intermediate statistical analysis.

But don't worry all you Drew supporters, he isn't the worst singing Theo ever made.  No sir, that batton has been passed to Carl who should be forced to change his first name so not to be confused with another left fielder in Fenway named Carl.

Can you please tell me how you are able to watch the games for free, listen to the games for free, get free tickets to Fenway, free food and drink at Fenway, and free Red Sox merchandise?  Also, and this is very important, can you please tell me how you are able to avoid watching commercials, listen to Don and Jerry's promos, and not have to look at all those sales banners in the field?  Thank you so much in advanced.

As a West Coast Sox fan, I was at Candlestick watching the 49ers up 24-14 after Romo got taken out but, despite a broken rib and a punctured lung, he asked to return. I saw him with these injuries get hit even more. With 10 minutes left he rallied Dallas to a TD and field goal to tie & then threw a 90 yard pass in OT to win. I mean this is in a contact sport and he returned & could have seriously injured himself. Difference is he is not a whimp  !!!

Can't Crawbaby get a massage, acupressure, apply ice then apply heat, take anti-inflamatories, Ibuprofen, Menthol penetrating cream etc. etc. ??? and play with some pain for the good of the team & the fans ???

First of all, thank you for proving my point that Sox fans judge everything by the first season.  Your annointing of Crawford as the worst signing etches this reputation among Sox fans in stone.  Even if the next 6 eyars put Crawford in Cooperstown, he has already been labeled a bust.

But now, for the funny part of my post.  Once again, you denigrate OPS, a stat I honestly questionyour comprehension of.  For the nth time, you insist Drew's OPS is the result of a lot of walks, and "a walk is not as good as a hit."

While I agree that a walk is not the same as a hit, SO DOES OPS!!!!

A walk only counts in the "OBP" portion of the stat, whereas even a single is a total base, and therefore contributes to both sides, the OBP and the SLG.  The walk, which you clearly undervalue, is actually the smallest portion of OPS.

I really want to keep going without getting too condescending, so bear with me.  Your repeated assertation that Drew's .927 OPS in 2008 and .914 in 2009 were bolstered by walks.  You do realize that he slugged .522 and .519 in those years, right?  I would say that his slugging was a more significant contributor to his OPS than his walks.  In 2008, his sluggin pct was second on the team, only .010 behind Manny.

And don't get me started on the RBI.  Yes, you know the totals.  But me and my inability to "grasp intermediate statisical analysis" looked way deeper into those numbers and found a huge problem to be people on base in front of him. I can only assume your superior statisical mind also discovered this.  (So much for not getting condescending. But I did try. Honestly.) So while you accuse others of not understanding statisitcs, and all you can come back with is your usual defining of "clutch" by looking at RBI or BA with RISP.  And I don't recall ever seeing anything else from you.

I think that is why I like your posts.  It's the nostagia. They are usually about as informative as the back of a 1980 Topps Card....
