Red Sox success is going to kill this thread idea.

Re: An ALTERNATIVE to the game threads: REDSOX vs. YANKEES

Great game last night.  Pretty deflating in the first when the RS had another golden opportunity to come away with some runs but couldn't make it happen.  Then the first two reached for the Yanks in the bottom half, and I'll be honest - I thought we were in trouble.  But Beckett matched CC and battled back, and pitched a great game from that point on.  Gonzo, what can you say about him?  He is an amazing hitter.  In retrospect of course, Girardi let the best lefty on the roster face him (can't really blame him), and he (Gonzo) did not look good in his first to ABs.  But I think teams are going to learn pretty quickly that Gonzo is able to make adjustments as the game goes on - a different look from a different pitcher may have been the better move in that situation.

Based on very similar career numbers, there have been a lot of comparisons of Lackey and Beckett.  But watching Beckett recently reminds of the key difference - Lackey has generally been consistent and steady through his career, but not typically dominant, even when pitching to his highest potential.  Beckett on the other hand does have that potential to absolutely dominate when he is at his best.

Wishing game today was this afternoon and not an ESPN game.  Yankees/Red Sox match-up will likely go past midnight.  Ugh.  A sweep though, would make it worth going to work tired tomorrow.

I like UR point on Lackey. He appears to be emotionally driven, which can irritate fans as they watch him wear it on his sleeve. But he can dominate periodically. He still has that ability.

Let's hope for the best for the final game:

Lackey can "dominate, periodically"? Define "periodically"? I'm laughing so hard it hurts.

Glad you got a kick out of it.
Laughter is good for what ails ya!

Here are some examples of Lackey's periodic dominance:

His 4-0 mark against his former club prior to his last outing vs. them.

14-5  2.96 ERA vs. interleague teams.

    17-6 2.86 ERA vs. the A's.

    11 - 4  3.75 ERA vs. the Rays

    10 - 4  3.05 ERA vs. the O's

In addition, he gave the RedSox a chance to win over 75% of his starts in 2010.

If you spend most of your time in the dark, you'll never see any light.

What an amazing come-back tonight against the O's.
I wonder how long it'll be before AGONE gets the Bonds treatment of free passes.
Great work by the BP tonight.

    The team never gave up.

Amazing game indeed.  Reminds me of the those teams that could be down by any number of runs, but you never felt like they were out of the game.  Wins like that build character and confidence.  Pedey's long AB was key once again.  Nice to see him continue to contribute, even through struggles.  AG - what can you say about him?  Amazing.  There will be a lot more of that ahead.  Youk is really coming around as well.  We will see how the pitching shapes up for the next couple of weeks, beyond 1-3.  Could be key.

Re: An ALTERNATIVE to the game threads

Another key, kt888, is the fact that the Sox now sport a lethal 3-4-5 hitting tandem - among baseball's best. With Ellsbury finding confidence in leading this offense from the lead-off spot, this line-up is becoming a nightmare for opposing pitchers.

The speed element of CRAWBURY only adds to it.
