Andrew Bailey placed on DL for shoulder issue

    Not good.

    Peter Gammons @pgammo

So with Bailey DL'd(shoulder) and Bucholz tbd Boston scrambling for Yanks and Rays

    OverTheMonster @OverTheMonster

    And there goes Bailey. Again

    Pete Abraham @PeteAbe

#RedSox confirm (as @pgammo said) that Andrew Bailey is on the DL with a shoulder injury.

edit: Jose DeLaTorre recalled from AAA Pawtucket

And it seems like only yesterday we were concerned about Jonathan Papelbon's health. Is closer going to be the new revolving door position for the Sox? If they are going to go anyhwere this season, it's going to show how far you can go without an established closer. I hope Farrell has good juggling skills.

Re: Andrew Bailey placed on DL for shoulder issue

With so many young arms in our sytem theres likely several guys who are potential all-star closers in our system now.....only problem is that doesn't help us NOW!

Even though I'm still kinda against this and spoke against it before I'm starting to wonder if throwing a guy like RDLR in the bullpen and seeing what he can do there may be well worth it.  His stuff will be electric there and it can give us a good chance to minimize his innings this season.

The way I look at it is if we mess him up by switching him to the bullpen then back to the rotation then that would be equivalent to losing him + more prospects in a trade anyways.

I understand the rebuttal to this may be to trade for a closer but at this point we could really use 2 arms in the bullpen....one of those really should come from within.

Looks like the Sox will be giving RDLR, Britton and a couple other internal options every chance to succeed before they start trading away prospects. Even if they do make a trade, I doubt they give up any top ones for bullpen help.

also, they are not serious about Garza and dont like the asking price for Norris. So they are making it known that they are indeed sticking to their plan of not letting the future go in just any trade.

Id expect the Sox to be very busy the next 2 weeks.

Prolblem is, bullpen arms come at a premium, at the deadline. Most teams are looking for them and are held for  ransom

As I had stated in another thread the game Farrell left Thornton in against righties AND pitched Uehara for 2 innings and in a non save situation, it was very clear that Bailey was hurt.

There was no reason other than injury that he should not have pitched yet all the experts were out there saying Bailey was being saved for a save situation. Ha.

This makes the decision whether to tender Bailey for next year an easy one. He breaks down every year.

Middle relievers are about as predictable as the weather...There's nothing wrong with seeing if either of these guys have anything left.  Not sure why moves like this bother people.  Zero risk, high reward...

costs nothing and they are in AAA. maybe catch lightning for a month or 2 with one of them out of the pen. maybe not. Certainly doesnt hurt to stockpile BP arms though.

Bailey has labrum and capsule damage. Surgery seem likely. Regardless, probably out for the year.

Southpaw - Thanks for update. I guess this decides what the Red Sox will do with Bailey next year, non-tender. He won't return until 2015.  Also, with Bailey and Hanrhan off books, the Red Sox are down about $13M from this year's salary.

Andrew Bailey is over.Stick a fork in this dog because he is all done. You really didn't want to see this guy as our closer any way.......did you? Elbow problems before he got here, Tommy John and Lateral Epicondylitis, Billy shipped us almost dead meat. Now a shoulder issue. For all you posters that said we have to wait and see on the Reddick/Bailey trade because we need more time to evaluate, that's over too. We got stuffed on this one,BIG TIME. If it means any thing all (3) players we gave up are still playing with the A's organization and Alcantara is 10-1 in the low minors. Actually this move forces Ben to address the problem sooner than later.

Re: Andrew Bailey placed on DL for shoulder issue

Given the situation with Buchholz and Bailey, there are just two options. Use some of our young pitching prospects down the stretch or else trade them for the available pitching on the selling teams. Personally, I would vote for the former. These kids are supposed to be so good, let's find out. Throw them in there and sink or swim. We are only going to get ripped off in the trade market.

Re: Andrew Bailey placed on DL for shoulder issue

wow, and so it continues. We need a closer and there are a few out there. Glen perkins and steve cishek are likely our best options, maybe we could trade for a package of peavy and addison reed? fill 2 needs at once. reed is young too, so he could be our closer of the future. Not sure how much i like peavy given his age and injury history, but if the price is right he might be worth looking into. Gallardo is a possibility too, not sure how much interest we have in him but if the sox are not looking for a rental, then he is the guy. I really hope we avoid bud norris, his whip is brutal and his strikout rate is way down. no thanks.
