really?? excellent pitching is when your starter, oh excuse me, your "Ace" is done after 5 innings? how about that routine liner that a veteran like Byrd should catch? I got news for ya.. Its the offense, but its also the defense AND the pitching...pretty much every aspect of this team is kickin the pooch right about now... -

Chen had given up 12 runs in his last 2 starts, they should've hammered him and yes needing 90 plus pitches just to get thru 4 inns is bad pitching. -

I guess now people may understand by BV has to try and stretch pitchers out on the very few opportunities he has. The bullpen is gassed, pitchers can't get out of the 3rd, 4th and 5th. At the same time I am reminded of the line in bull durham. you throw the ball, you catch the ball you hit the ball.......Not happening in Boston. -

You obviously do not read the Globe. The Red Sox as a team have a 6.05 ERA since September 1. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2012/05/the_pitching_nu.html -

Yep, specifically the outfield defense. We are finding numerous ways to play poorly. -

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the defense is getting exposed. 3 runs should have been enough last night, and lester should have out of the inning after 14 pitches. he didn't get the called third strike and then the wheels came off the defense.
Byrd is probably a nice guy but he is no CF. Poor jumps, terrible reads and just shaky all around.
Ross is what he is. never been known for his defense and absolutely no speed in the OF. Right now, Sweeney is the best we have out there and he is only just above average.
Linares should be called up to play CF until Jacoby comes back. Byrd needs to go to the bench. -

Oh yeah that was great pitching, really excellent. Maybe next time he can get to 100 pitches in three innings.Making a couple defensive plays would have been kinda nice as well.Softy, Manny Ramirez is not walking in that door. And you're caught up in a bygone era of steroids and home run records. Now it's about young pitching, speed (your favorite) and timely run scoring (e.g. clutch). -

A strange argument to blame either the defense or the offense. Both aspects of Red Sox baseball are faltering at this time. -

Just outscore the opponent. With offense , defense or pitching. Just do it. Sox are playing losing baseball, failing in all areas. Three runs against a nobody like Chen is sad. There are too many soft spots in this lineup. -

The hitting was definitely off, but I think a little of that is the residual effect of playing 39 innings in three games against the Orioles, then going to KC to play 3 more games. The first game, an 11-5 win, was terrific. But then I think they started to show a little tiredness. Last night AGon got one terrific clutch hit, but everyone else looked weak. Middlebrooks--nothing, maybe because the hammie is still bothering him. Aviles got 2 hits, but couldn't do spit with men on base--he left 6 guys stranded. Good bunt by Byrd in the 9th, but Sweeney couldn't bring McDonald home from third. -

The Red Sox lost nearly every game with Ells back in CF. They are close to .500 without him.
The pitching was good, without a doubt. One has to be an idiot to think that the pitching was poor and the offense did it's job. The pitching did it's job, and the offense did not. Even the poor defense wasn't enough to lose to the hapless Royals and Bruce Chen, if the Red Sox offense was better than pitiful.
