ANOTHER loss helped along by Sleepy & Dopey

29 games into the season and Valen-cchino / McClure STILL can't figure out when to pull a starting pitcher.

Maybe this is why NO MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM has hired Bobby since he was asked to leave the Mets 10 YEARS AGO.

How many more times this year can they leave the starter in 2 or 3 or 4 batters too long?

Wrong. When he went out to pitch the 8th, Bard had thrown 86 pitches.

They need to trade for a closer.  It has to happen

Youk and Lars to a non-contending team for their closer. Done deal. Bailey comes back and pitched the 8th.

Re: ANOTHER loss helped along by Sleepy & Dopey

The answer is that Bard IS the closer and should not be starting. Pitch counts are basically irrelevant, because as a two-pitch pitcher he can't get through a lineup 3 times. The effectiveness of his two primary pitches has been negated by the fact that pacing himself in a starter's role has forced him to decrease velocity on both the fastball and slider, both of which have been far more ineffective as a result. Though he has maintained a speed differential between his FB and change, the change is still a waste pitch and he is only throwing it 2% more than he did last year as a set-up man.
Bottom line is that unless he can master a third pitch in a real hurry, he will continue as a mediocre 4th starter instead of a possibly elite late-inning option. Cry all you want about Dice-K, Lackey, Crawford et al, this misuse of a home-grown talent sits sqaurely on the shoulders of the new order.

A non-contending team would have little need for the pricey expiring contract of 33-year-old corner infielder Kevin Youkilis.

Seattle might be willing to part with All Star closer Brandon League for Lars Anderson and Garin Cecchini (the latter may be blocked by Will Middlebrooks). League, who spent parts of six seasons with Toronto in the AL East, had a 2.79 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 37 saves last year and has a 2.40 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and seven saves this year.

I hate to see the farm system raided for yet another out of towner who may fail miserably just as many can't miss out of town players have imploded here in the past.

But yeah the bullpen is at Defcon 1 - immediate action necessary or the Sox will become sellers at midseason.

Part of me would love to see the Sox be sellers at midseason and then replenish for next season though.  Dumping Josh Chicken man would be a good start and if Lackey was pitching I'd dump him also. I think they are both cancers that need to be removed sooner rather than later.

I think some teams would take him if healthy and they had a temporary need at 1B or 3B.... really it all involves the Sox overpaying to unload him.

The difference in the game? 2 of 4 walks by Bard ended up scoring. None of the 5 walks issued by Duffy scored.
The RS need to do a better job taking advantage of the free passes.

Eck had it right last night. Bard was too concerned with the base-runners and lost his focus on the hitters.

Aceves is the closer, not Albers, and has not bee scored upon since the 15-9 debacle. The dinger was from a pitch outside the strike zone.
