From Adam Rubin of ESPN New York: "• More on the justification of trading Pedro Beato for Kelly Shoppach : On the acquiring end, the Mets deemed it valuable to have the free-agent-to-be Shoppach in-house for the final seven weeks of the season to gauge how good a match he is for them in terms of rapport with pitchers and adaptability to Mets philosophies. As for Beato, he had fallen into disfavor and was not long for the 40-man roster anyway. A member of the organization described Beato's stuff as maddening. Sometimes the fastballs would come in at 96 mph; other outings they'd be 89 mph. While most likely it will end up being Shoppach, the expectation is the Mets will pair a low-cost righty-hitting catcher such as him with Josh Thole in 2013. That way the available dollars can be focused on other positions of need. Thole should qualify for arbitration for the first time this offseason, despite less than three full years of major league service time, but his salary nonetheless will be modest. Beato, incidentally, could face Buffalo this weekend with Triple-A Pawtucket." http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/54742/mets-expecting-kirk-to-return-to-majors-in-september

I liked Shoppach, Saltalamachia is a strike out machine, major hole in his swing. The Atlanta Braves must have known something.

One better Mark Prior was released. Just a chip off of the old block (Theo), another high upside guy who did not pan out. Another great pickup Ben. This team is dead if its depending on Ben to straighten out this team next year.

Is every minor leaguer we pick up supposed to become an AS?

Other upside pickups over the past couple of years-

    Morales
    Atchison
    Albers
    Padilla
    Miller
    Mortensen
    Aceves

We're doing much better on the upside guys than the downside guys.

Shoppach is your standard ham and egger. He has no trade value. Basically , you move him to try and save a few bucks , while making room for Lavarnway. That is all.

Re: Another stellar trade by the Blunder Boy!

Guys, Shopp was going to be a FA in 7 weeks. He was playing on a team all but out of it, who should have been in "sell mode" on the waiver wire. IMO, the only value he had (has) was to a contending team. When the Mets got him, I was surprised, but happy that the prospect we got in return looks promising (recent stats not with standing). The article from the NY paper sounds strange, but I guess with a catcher and all the intracacies that goes withthe catching position, they may be interested in signing as a FA for next year, they could give him a chance to learn the staff, the system, and get more comfortable if he is to return to NYM next year.

If we were still in the race, trading Shoppach would have made no sense. I assumed we were out of it about the time of the Shoppach trade, but it appears BV is still making out line-ups that he thinks are the best for this year and not the future (No Lava, no Ciriaco...), so it does look curious as to why we traded Shoppach at that moment. If it was because upper management felt we were out of it, so let's get a prospect while we can for a departing FA, then why are we not playing the kids now? Why haven't we traded Ross & Cook?

    Hmmm...

moon, I have no idea why anyone chooses to blame Ben for the problems he inherited.   Ben knows we need to dump salary from the Theo signings if we ever intend to improve this club.

Everyone should just give the guy a chance.  Losing Theo was the correct thing to do but Francona?   Too much all at once, we should have sat him down "which probably happened" but didn't need to let him go just yet.  People learn from their mistakes, hopefully both our management and Francona, for not addressing the issues a bit better have both learned from their mistakes

The funny part is, Alibike posted that we didn't get enough for Shoppach, and despite most posters thinking that we did, and despite several posters asking Ike what he thought we should get back, he never asnwered.

So he has no idea what we should've gotten back for a backup catcher, only that whoever we got wasn't enough.
