    Back SPASM....note the singular use

I've never, EVER heard of an athlete missing time with a back spasm. Spasms? Sure. But a single, isolated back spasm is a twinge. A momentary discomfort.

I swear, it was mroe he didn't want to pitch in the rain anymore after walking in a run.

Everyone is different, but TYPICALLY when a guy has a bad back spasm on the mound, there is some physical sign of it. An arching of the back or something. Beckett threw that pitch, walked the run home, and signaled to the dugout. No grimace, no outward signs of pain. Just done.

And the team states back spasm. Not spasms. Spasm.

He is the JD Drew of pitching, in so many ways:

    1) Can't pitch unless he is 100%, without a doubt, injurr free, and 99% pain free. Sometimes this means multiple specialist visits just to assure him that, no, nothing is wrong, and yes, he's just a baby, just like Drew.

    2) Some fans keep making excuses for this guy and talking about "if he hits his stride...", just like Drew.

    3) Management simply will not say anything cross to the guy. They will let him have his days off, and defend him (like Henry defending his conditioning at the end of last year) in the face of all reason, just like Drew.

    4) He's on a 5 year, overpaid, only-made-sense-to-the-Sox deal. Really, did ANYONE feel good when they announced that deal right after he got destroyed in the season opener in 2010? Or was it 2009? All those horrible starts to the season kind of meld into one embarrassing mess.

I just can't stand the guy, he needs to go away. I'm thinking it's almost time to handle him like the Jets handled Keyshown those many years ago: "you're still getting paid, just go home, we don't want you around."

Could be he motioned for the trainer remembering 2010, and wanting to get ahead of it BEFORE something happened that kept him out two months like it did that year.

Idiotic OP. He was getting twinges, but this time, unlike 2010, got then trainer out there early. Both starters struggledmwithnthe slippery mound. So did morales and mortensen.

Have you ever had a back spasm? or spasms? If not then be quiet.
They suk big time. Had one once. Had a stiffness and a twinge. Then made the mistake of not doing some thing right away. Two hours later I was like a pretzel. I could not stand up and the only time I felt comfortable was driving home from my son's hockey game.
I have learned when I get that same feeling to do something immediately cause it is not getting better on its own.

    SEE!

People make excuses for this guy left and right! Orsillo, on the broadcast read it and it went like this "Left the game with back spasms....back spasm." He corrected himself. The NESN ticker stated a singular spasm. Now people make excuses for him? he was feeling more? It was just like in 2010 and he's staying ahead of the curve? He's a pampered, soft, whiny baby. It's 2012, NOT 2007, and Beckett is not channeling his inner mid-2000's anytime soon. I doubt he'll ever be a .500 pitcher for the Sox again. He's been getting steadily worse for 2 years (or, really, a calendar year) and he's 32, and has shown up to 2 straight spring trainings in very questionable condition. Am I to assume he'll suddenly refocus this year? I don't have that kind of faith, not in him. Lester, perhaps, but not Beckett.

I wake up, stay, and go to sleep angry when thinking about this team. I can't imagine why anyone would be anything other than angry/frustrated with them. It's like paying for a Jaguar and getting all the power, comfort and handling of a Taurus. Would anyone be happy with that? "Well, at least the windows aren't cracked."

Beckett on the post game. he said it was a singular spasm. it locked up on him, it got worse, couldnt throw a strike. called out the trainer. Said it was similar but not as severe as 2010 in NY, when he experienced multiple spasms, similar condition rain, wet mound Back was stiff, would be re evaluated today by the medical staff

Those who don't like Becketts attitude/perforance, is one thing. To call him out and criticize him for leaving a game due to an injury, is in the same category as the fans booing him. disgraceful.

not one of your better post, dragon

Re: Back SPASM....note the singular use

Now that I have said that, like many I've had back spasms and they are nothing to fool around with. If you don't take care of it you could be on your back laid up for a few very painful days. Not fun.

As for Beckett, I'm not sure what to make of him any longer but for the fans to boo him coming off the field is disgusting. You may not like a player for many reasons but you don't boo someone when they get an injury. Very low class and doesn't reflect very well on the Sox fan base.

I've said this before. Knowing what Boston fans can be like why would any free agent want to come here, deal with a very negative, over reactive media that blows every little thing out of proportion and too many fans (I know the minority) who seem to delight wallowing in the same swill. Coming from Boston I wonder what others think of our fair city and I'm not talking about NYC Jets fans or Laker Fans.

if true...back spasms can be bad.....I have had them.
The pain is crippling when it really flares up. Cause me to have to lay on the floor a few times just to relieve the pain. Not an injury to mess with..

J-BAY..... "LET ME BE CLEAR", He is  QUITTER, because he doesn't want to play here anymore.... Matter a fact, I really think that he wants to just go home and collect his direct deposit and get back to his hunting.  Does anyone on this board actually think that he has been better than a #3 since 2008  ????

First of all, I just think he hurted his back last week during his last start at the same time he wanted to pitch today due he is tired of hearing all kind of craps from the medias as well from fans like yourself.  He just wanted to prove that he is not a cancer to the clubhouse.  Somehow his back got worsen.  He probably wish that he could skip his start last nite at the same time he know everyone would be all over him.  So he gambled it all wrong.

Leave him alone and seriously, he will pitch better than Lester for the rest of the season.  I would guarantee you that!!

If you want to bash someone, bash Lester!!  He is a much younger guy than Beckett, and Lester havent improve himself since last June of 2011 or something like that!!

Beckett said his back “locked up” on him pitching out of the stretch on the slippery mound out if the stretch. Verlander also mentioned that throwing out the stretch was difficult and that he slipped a few times.

two things...one...it has to be almost impossible to throw the ball hard and accurate with back spasms....so no hate there for beckett

    but...

the conditoning thing again....will he ever try it and be serious? he seems like he has no committment to the team by keeping himself in game shape....and that isnt hate but legit...
