    Bailey, Melancon, Hanrahan...

Posterboys as a warning for those who advocate giving up prospects for relievers. Very volatile position. Tread carefully Ben...

we gave up Melancon for Hanny. There were prospects included in the deal but none that were any good or will be sorely missed. the Deal was essentially Melancon+ for Hanrahan.

MEF...I know Melancon was included in the Hanrahan deal. But the year prior he was acquired from the Astros. He had a great year with them, bombed with us, and now is back to solid form with PIT. I would only advocate trading potential 40 man roster crunch guys for relievers. My point is that we better not give up the wrong prospect/become too desperate to fill the pen.

We have to wait a few more years before evaluating the Reddick for Bailey trade. Maybe someday it will make sense.

Reddick really hasn't been that good. The trade right now I would say is currently in the Sox favor even with Bailey hurt.

How can you say that?  Reddick was very good last year. Has been struggling , but  showing improvement this year. Bailey has accomplished nothing, and now is lost for probably the rest of his contract. How can this be in our favor?  Never mind the other players involved, this was a bad deal.

I read that the Red Sox might consider offering Bailey arbitration. Why would you ever do that, given that he won't see the light of day next year. Makes no sense. Non-tender him and let him walk. He doesn't have any market now.

He had 32 home runs and couldn't crack an OPS of 800. That shows how truly unimpressive his season way. He would not have even made the team this year. However Bailey is a big reason the Sox have the most wins in baseball and has one more year of control. Put in the Sox favor.

He would be back by the ASG. Tender him and he would be the like acquiring a pitcher at the TD or don't and watch him get a two year deal somewhere else.

Which is why offering arb. is a good thing. They will get him for at least half next year if injury goes according to reportsat a bargain and at far less than his current 4 mil.

BTW why let a 29 yr old pitcher with a good history walk????

Belinsky1962,  The point of controversy about Bailey is that when we got him he wasn't healthy. He was coming off "Tommy John" surgery, had a couple of failed bullpen and side sessions and developed Lateral Epicondylitis before he got here. It was our problem because  we went ahead with the deal even though this information was out there. We got half-dead meat for three healthy guys. You evaluate the trade from the time it happened, 12-28-11 to now. All three of the guys we gave up are still in the A's organization and playing. Neither of the (2) we got are playing and only one is still with the organization.

Bailey is a big reason why the Sox have the most wins in baseball?  How do you figure that ?  The one more year of control will consist of paying him while he cannot pitch. Are you being serious ?

He was a huge part of the run they put together in April. Without him they don't have 59 win plain and simple. But it is good to see that you are willing to give up your position that the Sox gave up anything of value for him.

I think he said it because Reddick is horrible. Its cool if you don't like Bailey, but that doesnt mean it was a bad trade or that it doesnt make sense.

I have no idea why you would want Reddick.  in 1200 career at bats he is hitting 240 with an OPS of 720.

    That is bad.

and this year he is extremely bad.

For comparison Mike Carp for his career is hitting 267 with an OPS of 790.

Somehow I don't think the loss of Reddick hurt.  At all.

Snake.... Where you been? Still tokin that bad Gonja I see. Where's your man Kalish? Now you substitute Carp for Kalish because Carp is healthy and the ultimate DL'er, RK, is not. O.K. Snake,go for it. I understand. If your guy's not playing you got no stake in the game and you'll be allowed a substitute,(Carp). But remember, when Ryan Kalish emerges from a mist shrouded corn field in September and leads us to the WS, you can't say, "Told YA!!!". Welcome back.

Bailey absolutely is a 100% bust.  A terrible acquisition.

Would have been better off acquiring a draft pick for Reddick.  Just a horrible trade.

    Defense.  It is still important.
