Bard = Choke City

    Bard has lost eight games this year.  There is no way around that and making him a closer would make no sense.

    [QUOTE]In Response to Re: Bard = Choke City :  The problem I have with your analysis is that you are looking at the entire year. The problem didn't exist earlier in the season, when he was terrific, so those stats are irrelevant. The problem has arisen in the last several weeks during which time he has been horrible. The "nobody can be perfect every game" quote seems bizarre in light of how badly he has pitched recently, losing 3 games in the last week.

    Are you a pitching coach? Have you studied the videos of recent games. Is it velocity, arm slot, mechanics or is it location / control or lack of confidence? Is sitting in your armchair a better vantage point than the view that the coaches have and the videos in slow motion? What credentials and expertise do you bring other than your unfounded opinions?

    [QUOTE]Danny Bard may have electric stuff, but he is the Calvin Schiraldi of this team.  A 100mph fastball and a huge breaking curve are no substitute for being willing and able to throw strikes, especially in the clutch.  If the Sox don't come back from the 3 runs he just gave up, that will be 8 (8!!!) losses so far this year.  Are you kidding me?  Talk about just absolutely wasting an otherwise good effort from the team today.  Whatever Bard's issue is, I don't think I want him as my partner in a high stakes skins match.  Yips anyone?

    Bard is struggling and although Francona loves to show confifence in a pitcher by throwing him right back out there its not always the correct thing to do.  This is why we have a pitching coach and other resources to see if something either mechanically or mentally could be atributing to Bards struggles.

    A whole lot of nonsense on this thread.

    Yes, he walked the first two guys on 9 pitches.  But his next 12 pitches were 10 strikes and 2 balls, which is very good.

    What went wrong was that first Bard made and error on sacrifice bunt, loading the bases, and then Youkilis mishandled a tailor made double play ball (3d to home to first or 3d to 2d to first, take your pick), but still got the runner out at first for the first out.  Then the single, scoring two more, then a double play ball that wasn't mishandled.

     My response was to Moonslav59 and the statistics he used and had nothing to do with mechanics. It's not an unfounded opinion to state that Bard was great early in the season but that he has been horrible of late and lost 3 games in a week. It doesn't take credentials and expertise to point that out. I like the guy but he has stunk recently. He'd probably tell you the same thing.

    It's refreshing that someone actually watched the game and noted the above.

    Bard is struggling of late.  There's no doubt about that.  He's let in 10 runs this month.  That's more than his run total for May, June, July and August combined.

    But to say that he's a choker is simply ignorance.

    The team played phenomenally in June and July when they posted a winning percentage over .700.  An incredible stretch.  Now they are paying for it.  Hopefully they can find their game before the season is over.
