Long as they're willing to pay they will come. It's always about the money, always.

If Ciriaco makes a rather routine play Beckett is through 3 innings with no hits allowed.

Instead he is booed off the mound with an apparent injury.

I'd say the Pink Hatters were out in full force last night.  The boo's are just an extention of the over the top media negativity directed at Beckett and the team as a whole.

All and all a pathetic showing.

I agree.  The guy finds lots of excuses to get on the DL so it's hard to know if he is injured or not.

My thought was for whatever reason he couldn't find the strike zone, he got himself in trouble, it was raining, he was fed up so he was done.

The nice warm club house was looking pretty good to him. The chicken and beer were calling his name LOL

No apologies for thinking this, the guy has earned this reputation.
I don't know if I would have booed him or not, were I there. But let's do remember this isn't a typical case of a guy getting injured in a start.  Beckett is the man who came to camp out of shape after blowing off the rtrainers last season-- and getting out of shape.  And who basically gave fans the virtual finger when they questioned his playing several rounds of golf when he missed a start because of an injury. Sorry -- for the money he makes and the effort ge puts out between starts-- I've no problem with fans booing him. I think the booing also was a reaction to the fact that fans thought we'd seen the last of him, then when he didn't get traded, he comes out, pitches well-- like, hey, look, Josh might actually be OK for a while -- then boom, back to normal with the injuries and inconsistencies. ...and the frustration from fans that he always finds a way to disappoint...
    Posted by Ergoetal
I think your'e right. Beckett brought this on himself. If he wanted fan loyalty he should have tried harder to be a team player.

Thanks, Zac.  Yours is the post I was looking for in this thread to quote.

Maybe I'm not as astute as the average fan.  I was watching the game on tv and didn't notice the difference in his motion as the game was in progress.  And from my experiences being in the park I wouldn't have noticed it had I been there either.  I also wouldn't have had the benefit of instant replay nor Remy and Orsillo to explain to me what was going on.

I'm not saying I would have boo'd him.. I certainly wouldn't.  Booing isn't my personal style.  But I understand why SOME of the fans who were there, those who were convinced before the game started, that Beckett is the devil reincarnate would have, given what they saw.

Unfortunately, Beckett, by his past behavior, has somewhat 'earned' the reputation of being a horse's patoot and last night it came home to roost.

I don't condone what happened, but I DO understand it.

Two totally different circumstances, geo.  Booing any player, leaving due to an injury, is disgraceful. Valentine was booed for managerial decision. Both uncalled for, IMO

I called for his firing in May--BV...I have not seen anything to change my mind on that other than the onus is on BV to get the team 10 games above .500 so he can match Tito's worst year as a Sox manager.

    Posted by mryazz
Speaking generally....

Yes, I DO think they care if we boo them.  I think they know that they're at the very top of their profession and I think it hurts them when fans remind them that they're not playing up to the standards that THE FANS have set for them.

I also think they try every game and on every pitch, play, or at-bat to be as good as they can be.  I believe they're very competitive people by nature, whether competing against themselves or another team and to be "reminded" by the fans when they're unsuccessful only rubs salt in an open wound of failure.

    But.. that's JMHO.

yazz, accepting a 54-51 record as "admirable" and saying you were waiting for 3 years for the Sox to rid of Tito when he was winning at a far higher percentage rate doesn't compute.

It's simple:  Beckett doesn't care so why should the fans?

Think about what Curt would have done if that happened to him.  He would have tried to stay in...He may have thrown some practice pitches.  He would have addressed the media and talked about how disappointed he was about what happened and how he woudl address the matter...Contrast that to Beckett who pretty said he has no reaction to the fans whatsoever.

And re:  Free Agents coming to Boston.  99% of all free agents go to the highest bidder.  Period.  Most of them would play in Sibera for 5% more........

I love how the bootlickers claim that Beckett was the Cy Young last year until "the last 6 innings of the season"

The man starting breaking down his first start in September - didn't last 2 innings......and then proceeded to get shelled in his last 2 starts.......Pretty predictable w/ Beckett these days....Lester doesn't like Aprils and hasn't pitched well in the PS for awhile now and Beckett hasn't finished a season strong in years......

    let's be pefectly clear here:

Beckett made over $500,000 last night

    $500,000 USD

    for working for ONE HOUR

Meanwhile, you had people in the stands maybe go to the only game they can afford to go to in years just to watch him pitch for 1 hour.

I think people are sick of the great disparity between high paid athletes and their current economics.

The bottom line is the fans pay their salary.  And the players don't seem to remeber that.

$500,000 is what Beckett "earned", correction got paid last night.
