Beckett and the 7th inning!

It took a lot of guts for Francona to send Beckett out to the mound for the 7th inning. He had just given up 4 runs in the 6th that gave the Yankees the lead and he had hit a batter and walked another. Was this like sending Pedro back out there or was this perhaps because we don't have a reliable 7th inning guy? I think it's great that it worked out, but wondered what others thought of the move. -

I'll admit it, I cringed. Thought for sure Beckett looked done after the sixth. But as I've said before, Francona (and any manager) knows more about his personnel than any fan possibly could. He went with it and it worked to perfection. -

Lloyd...This is exactly why the Tito haters can never lose.
1. If Beckett got hit in the 7th, Tito is a bum.
2. If Tito brought in ANYONE else for Beckett in the 7th, and he got hit, Tito is a bum.
3. If Beckett pitches well in the 7th, they remain quiet or act like 1941 does...that's Tito's job and should not receive praise. It is a no-lose proposition for the Tito haters. -

It's actually pretty simple the first reaction was wow! Listen to Schilling who was also pretty surprised that he was sent back out, but then, stated that it was becasue Beckett's sense of responsibiltiy to the team...His job as the leader of the staff is to go 7 and even though the Yanks appeared to have solved him. That Beckett still had bullets left in his gun and wanted to get back out ands show that he still had the stuff to get us to the back end of the pen...which was later reinterated by Varitek in his post game pressor, refering to the 4 runs as being a wierd inning and that Josh still was throwing the ball well...

Or 4. It was still the wrong move, but he got lucky this time and the team won in spite of him. -

I think that tito thought that josh still had a couple of bullets left and saw who was coming up in the bottom of the 7th and rolled the dice. fortunately and to the delight of the 37 something thousand he rolled a winner. I hope that Jon Lester is ready to kick Burnetts azz tonight.

Curt Schilling said it was just exactly what Beckett needed to put a good shine on his effort for the game. The 4 spot was maddening to Beckett as much as anyone, and after all the rest of his excellence against the Yanquis this season, it gave him a way to keep his head on right about 5 good innings and one lost moment.
I appreciate Schill's input at that point. A former gamer and grinder telling us just what goes on in that kind of mind.
It did take some courage on Tito's part, but it worked out well.
I have some other thoughts about the game and game one elsewhere ... -

exactly georom! tonite I'm looking for Joh to go atleast 7 and give the ball to fredo the moneyman. that is, hoping he has a good decent lead. -

He looked in the pen and saw Bard, who can only pitch the 8th, and Pap, who can only pitch the 9th.
He could have brought in Albers but then Beckett had no chance for a win. So he consulted his magic 8 ball and asked, "should I send Josh back out for the
7th, and the little triangle rose to the top and said, "it is decidedly so". -

Tito might had asked Josh's opinion right after he finished 6th inning. Just a couple over 100 pitches until 6th inning, Josh was stellar in previous innings. Tito couldn't just took him out of the game becuase of just one shaky inning. I bet Tito asked Josh if he could go out for one more inning and Josh, of course, probably said yes. Tito didn't have to save up his BP that desperately since Lester is pitching tonite. Tito trusted his ace and Josh proved it. -

I thought he should have taken him out in the 6th, but completely agree with the OP that Francona knows what he is doing. A gutsy call redeemed by Beckett getting those six outs. -

I liked sending him out for the 7th. With better fielding in the 6th, the damage would not so bad. To be honest, based on how he pitched in the 7th, I might have let him start the 8th, with a short rein.
It worked out well, which is what is supposed to happen. Do I think it was a good managerial move by Francona? Yes I do and yes I did last night. When a good move doesn't work out, that doesn't change it to a bad move. And the same is true of a poor move. If it works, it's still a poor move.
A few games ago when Big Papi ran past third and was basically out by 20 feet at home was a poor decision. The fact that he scored the run does not make it a good decision.
If you pay attention to all my posts, you know that I am usually opposed to replacing a pitcher that has just had a 1-2-3 inning, and I am and always will be opposed to pitch counts. -

I think having 7th and 8th and 9th inning specialists is a joke. All relievers should be ready to go a minimum of 3 innings (Stretched out if you will). Why is it percieved that Bard can only pitch in an 8th inning and Paps can only pitch in a 9th inning?? Heck, put either of them in a 5th inning and tell them to pretend it's the 8th or 9th. -

Albers wasn't even warming up. Aceves was the guy warming up in the 6th inning and if he had to start the 7th with someone other than Beckett, it would have been Aceves, not Albers. Albers is nothing more than a mop up guy now. -

Anytime a starter can get past the 5th inning, it helps. get past the 6th and it makes a big difference. Finish the 7th and it is huge (only Bard and Paps may be needed).
One reason our pen has been so good this year is that they haven't been taxed a whole lot.
