G-d must love Tim Wakefield. Just when it seems like he's out of a job in the starting rotation, Andrew Miller self-implodes and injuries take down Josh Beckett and Erik Bedard. Wakefield will probably be in the rotation the rest of the way. With just over 20 games remaining, he could make another 4 starts, get his 200 wins, and possibly tack on an extra win or two to bring him within 5 of the all-time Red Sox record. Then the Red Sox brass will feel pressured to bring Wakefield back yet again in 2012 and half the posters here will immolate themselves.
If Beckett's injury is serious, and Bedard never quite recovers, there's a chance we're looking at John "6+ ERA" Lackey as a No. 2 starter in the playoffs. Wait 'till next year. -

That's quite the negative slant on things.
Thought it was agreed post 2004 to move on from such thinking?
Wakefield has more than earned his spot and left many millions on the table along the way. -

Wakefield is the only starting pitcher out of ST that has stayed healthy this year.
His presence in a sea of injuries is a Godsend.
And to think there's one idiot on this board who called and continues to call for his departure, using his age as a bias. -

The Sox are lucky that they kept Wake around. The guy has done whatever they have asked of him for many years. And yet the Wake haters rise up after every start screaming for his head. Show the guy some respect. -

How about Francona's latest "super sub" Aviles? Francona has just about played Aviles at every position except pitching and catching. If Aviles can't, then McDonald maybe? -

Lester
Slackey
Aceves (stop wasting him in losing starter efforts this late in the season)
Miller (Texas road start shows when on he's good and when off he's bad so what)
Weiland (2 starts, first bean ball O's distraciton and solid 6IP and 3ER)
Bedard (will see if back after skip start)
Wilson
Beckett ? we shall see
Buch decision made to either shelve Buch for season or pitch in relief ?
Wastefield lovers will swell with pride if he gets 200 wins against hapless Blue Jays, but there is no valid reason to carry this old junkball pitcher for PR record purposes.
Wastefield needs to be pitching for Yankees or Rays or any team that wants to add an old loser pitcher with an ERA over 5 for over 2 years. -

Pitching was a soft spot right from the start of the season. Everything would have had to click just right to have a good starting staff and compliment the hitting. What has happened :
- Needed a good year from Beckett ... got it
- Need the same from Lester as last year ... haven't got it
- Needed a step up year from Lackey ... haven't seen any consistency; overpaid.
- Needed the same from Buchholz as last year ... didn't get it ; injury
- Needed a good year from Matsuzaka ... injury ; may never see him pitch again.
- Aceves has been a good surprise but can't keep shifting his roles. He's best suited as a long reliever.
- Wakefield ... same as ever. Gives innings but needs a ton of run support.
- Miller ... no consistency.
- Bedard ... his knee was and still is a concern.
- AAA pitchers ... no experience and it shows. -

The thread title and OP appears to be talking only about Bedard's next start. Why hasn't that been addressed? Miller could very well save THAT DAY. -

So just to recap.....The deal at the trade deadline that would have brought Rich Harden to the Sox was blocked by the medical staff. The Sox turned their attention to Eric Bedard instead, whom the medical staff presumably signed off on since he was just coming back from knee surgery........Now Harden is striking out double digit batters and Bedard is getting skipped due to a barking knee. -

Very good "ipot". What the Red Sox Nation needs right now is lots of laughs to deal with the Sox recent rash of losses. GO SOX despite Theo and Francona.
