    BEN.....KISS

    KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID...

this off season, thanks to magic Johnson and limited free agent studs, you have simple choices that wll improve the team...

    sign papi..which you did

sign ross...which you are doing hopefully or napoli

and sign grienke or trade for King Felix...

keep your core players - dont give up any pitchers until Farrell has had at least a chance to work with them....

not bad, get greinke out of your head though.. he is going to become the highest paid RH'er ever and we don't need that on our books. especially when we just got out of crippling contracts. the only thing hes got going for him is that he is young and (hopefully) still getting better each year. he is not an ace. he could be an ace but i'd rather spend big money like that on a sure thing when it comes around. throwing money at greinke just because he is the best pitcher in a class of weak FAs doesn't mean we should be sending a dump truck of money his way.

So to you acquiring King Felix from Seattle is a "SIMPLE" thing, while not giving up any core players or pitchers that Farrell hasn't worked with again??

Signing Greinke, which may not be a good thing in the first place, is SIMPLE when it will cost the team a similar long term big dollar contract, like the ones they just walked away from...while competing with the other interested teams and the players preference of where he wants to play??

So who should follow the KISS rule here ..the OP or BEN?

Seattle G.M Jack Zduriencik said he was going to change his voice mail recording to, "I'm not trading Felix Hernandez," at the G.M. Meetings in Palm Springs a few weeks ago.  Sounds like he's in a rush to trade the "face of the franchise."

There a better chance of Zack Greinke's Mom pitching for the Red Sox next year than there is of Zack himself, but you keep hoping...

The best Red Sox prospects won't be enough to land Felix Hernandez. Acquiring Hernandez would be anything but simple ... it would be next to impossible.

im not saying the wheeling, dealing, and negotating would be easy....im simply saying you have to add an ace/very good pitcher....but once again i see a lot of lateral movement in ben's dealings that dont address our number 1 problem...our pitching...how did acquiring all those pitching retreads work out for us last year? You get what you pay for...stop worrying about Grienke - he has pitched very well for 9 years - Boston fans need to get overthemselves sometimes...the guy can pitch well anywhere....thats the easiest and best route inho and it wont cost us a dime more than two of those turkeys we unloaded in LA

Greinke, imo, is not an ace.  He had a single ace season.  Except for that single season, he has never received a single Cy Young vote, never made an AS team, never finished in the top-20 in ERA.  His single playoff season was a disaster, and he is #50 in ERA over the past three years.

He's still a very good pitcher, capable of a excellent year, but except for that one season four years ago, he's been a consistent #2.

Truly simple...the Sox being the only team in MLB that is looking for an ace pitcher...forget the fact that the teams that have such pitchers are not putting them on the market, and if they do come on the market you have to sell the farm to get them...again SIMPLE!

Must be that risk aversion issue Ben and I have...or maybe it is someone who is out of touch with reality!!

Over time, ERA becomes more accurate.

    • 2010=4.17
    • 2011=3.83
    • 2012=3.48

How long does someone have to pitch to a 3.48-4.17 before people expect a 3.48-4.17?

but you fail to see the risk of making greinke the highest paid RH'er in baseball... he is not a true ace. look at the numbers.

no doubt he is a great pitcher and would help the team but not one you give a historic contract to. He COULD become an ace as his best years are still ahead of him BUT, if that a gamble you risk the franshise for?? if you give him a contract like that it hamstrings you in future years when an actual bonafide ace is on the market we won't be able to sign them.

Although I don't generally care how much money the Sox spend, Greinke will cost as much as two, just as good, FA staters (A.Sanchez, Mccarthy, Villanueva, Haren, Harden) any two of which would give us more wins than Greinke.

Grienke is a terrible fit for Boston. All the attention he would receive, all the criticism he would receive, would result a total mental breakdown. He is a very good pitcher but this is not the place for him. We do need an ace, but its unlikely we are going to get one this year.

Georom, I like this approach.  The only thing i would switch out is Grienke.  Grienke will be way overpriced and his actual value is a little overestimated, IMO.  I would rather have a Brandon McCarthy, who will give similar performance, likely be better suited to Boston pressure-cooker, and significantly cheaper.  And, sure, if Felix is on the block, give the kids up and get her done.

i do not agree with this. i do not think greinke is a fit for the team but i don't base that on his mental issues. i base that on his ridiculous price tag. If you're his phychologist on the other hand, i will defer to your opinion. if not, i'll leave it to Grienke to decide if he can handle boston. there is no ace available this season. its best to leave that money free'd up in case one does become available in the coming years.
