Betts needs to play some 2B

The Sox need to get Mookie some starts at 2B and have Pedroia sit a couple times a week.

They need to see how Betts plays defensively at 2B.

Pedroia with no pop left in his bat, can't be handed the job anymore.

    Defense.  It is still important.

Schumps, this is why I like you posting. You bring up something that god forbid the Sox even remotely think about. If you are going to blow up things, do it right. There is absolutely no reason to think they couldn't trade Pedroia at some point for a top SP. Betts could be the future 2B, but in the Sox FO minds, you aren't even allowed to mention Pedroia and another team. It's okay to lowball, then trade Lester, not Dusty.

Pedroia has lost his power except he did hit one to the 420 corner yesterday for a GR double. It would be hard though to find a replacement for him who hits .270 and plays defense as well as Cano at his salary. Can you think of anyone?

    [/QUOTE]

Well, Betts is going to hit a lot better .270; but I like Betts in CF. Try and get s starting pitcher for Bradley. He's never going to hit .270!

Pedroia is a keeper in my opinion, but the Sox have made it clear that no one is untouchable in the pitching rotation (i.e. it didn't matter they had Lester, Lackey, Peavy, etc). So like Schumps said, what's the harm in letting Mookie get a week's worth of starts at 2b to show his worth...Does it matter if Dusty sits a few games at this point? Also at worst Dusty could DH, Ortiz could play 1st, Naps could sit a game, etc....lots of options.

And what if Betts is spectacular over there? Then what? I tell you what, puts the Sox in the driver's seat for sending a real star for a real topline SP.

But dare I say Dustin (or Nava for some of those board) without it becoming some sort of insult to the working fan....bullshoy...Everyone is expendable, that's the message I got from Mr. Cherington.

    I agree with the OP.

Pedey has been great for this team, but no way would he have ever hit third in a good lineup. And if Betts is that good -- he seems to have no problem hitting, plus it seems he'd be stealing more bases than Pedey -- then he'd be a better bet for the future than an aging Pedroia.

Sheesh, I guess we have a new whipping boy. Let's everyone dump on Pedroia now.

I've been hard on Pedroia because of his struggles in the clutch this year, so I'm hardly looking at him with blinders. But while he's not having an All-Star type season, he hasn't been terrible either. He's not hitting homers but he is sixth in the league in doubles. And if he hits a pair of doubles tonight, he'd be tied for third. For him, he is having an off year but a .279 BA and .344 OBP for a second baseman is pretty good. His clutch hitting w/RISP is big issue this year. And is defense is as good as it gets at second base and is just as important as SS defense.

The big thing is that he shouldn't be batting third. He never was a true No. 3 hitter. He should go back to being a No. 2 hitter

The problem with the OP was the line "handed the position."

Really, was Pedroia handed the position this year. Yes, his HRs were down last year, but last year he was third in the league in hits and third in the league in doubles and is 84 RBIs wasn't shabby either. He also was the best defensive second baseman.

Can we stop going from one extreme to another with players.

The OP wants to dump Pedroia because he has no power anymore. Betts is hardly a power hitter himself.

You have the BEST defense with Dustin Pedroia manning the right side of the IF.

BTW... great timing... Pedie unloaded into the Monster tonite

2014 is not Pedroia's fault.  Lighten up. You can't expect to win every year.  It's gonna be ok.

Re: Betts needs to play some 2B

It seems like there are a few in this thread who don't even want to find out if Betts can play second base.  What are you so afraid of?

The kid is a second baseman - let him play 1 - 2 times a week at 2B and let's see what he actually can do.

Willful ignorance is not a strategy.

And no - it isn't that Pedroia is a "whipping boy" (emotional garbage!)  - It's simply recognizing that he is 30 and has no pop this year.  5 HRs and he is batting third.  Come on.

Can we just find out if Betts can play 2B since we are out of the hunt?

    Defense.  It is still important.

Are you insane?  No one said he was "no good" - just that it is prudent to find out what your top prospect who is a SECOND BASEMAN can do

The Sox are out of the hunt and they have a young top prospect who needs to get some time at 2B; yet very emotional (pink hats?) insist that Dustin Pedroia must paly 162 games at 2B.

Okay.  What are you afraid of?

Play Betts at SS , 3 B or in the OF.

We have no production in CF from JBJ.

We have almost the same production from Xander.

Adding Betts to this game tonight, at any of those positions, and the game would be out of reach. It's like JF doesn't know what to do with Betts--he probably doesn't--he has no creativity.

Pedroia remains one of the top 2B in all of baseball, this is a ridiculous post.  His defense remains elite, and while he is having a poor season offensively it's only compared to his previous high standards.  His bWAR is still 3.0, ffs!

If you want to argue he should be moved down the lineup I could take you seriously, but otherwise it is just another of the complaining complainers complaining again.

Then stop being an idiot.  If you want to shop Betts in trade this off season - shouldn't he play some games at 2B - which is his ACTUAL position?
