    Big Papi Hangover?

Papi has suffered in the past from the home run derby hangover.   Tito has actually expressed his dislike for Papi participating in this event.

Papi looked like he was in better shape for the event this year.  It will be interesting to see if it takes him two weeks to start hitting again.

I don't remember any prolonged slumps from Ortiz after an all star appearance. Got any particular years in mind?

    Re: Big Papi Hangover?

It took him a while to getting moving last year.  There have been other years as well.

He is having a majical year, there are bigger fish to fry in the line up, so Papi is flying under the radar.  The real test will come in the post season, where I am betting we will see a 1 for 11 production once again.

It's amazing how one can be properly motivated when it's a contract year. It's all about the money.

    Re: Big Papi Hangover?

Yes, contract years seem to motivate most, even big sloppy.

The hangover has begun as expected.  0 for 4 last night and one very bad  plate appearance.  I guess Papi thought he was still going to get 75 mph balls thrown at him.

Lucky for him, after this series, the sox face teams with losing records.

    Re: Big Papi Hangover?

The hangover from the home run derby continues.  1 for 13 for the tampa series.  I am sure he will snap out it when he faces some triple a pitchers in Baltimore.  Right now he looks pretty bad at the plate.

He continues to struggle against the better the teams, not a good sign for the playoffs.

David Ortiz is a great asset to the Sox. he will be just fine and hopefully will get his 2 year deal. Anyone criticising him should keep it to themselves unless they think they can do better than him.

    Re: Big Papi Hangover?

Setting aside emotion..the numbers just don't lie. Ortiz' batting average before the all star break..? .304
His batting average after the all -star break..?  .077

    The numbers just don't lie.

Also..I would like to add that an overall average of 294 is hardly stellar for a DH...and especially when there are six position players with higher averages.

    Re: Big Papi Hangover?

The Papi fans want everyone to keep their comments about him silent.  They know ortiz was banging the needle in his rear, and he is only producing because it is a contract year.

Seattle was described as a double a team by a few Boston sports casters, yet big sloppy only managed 4 hits?  and nothing went yard. I think he is actually 4 for 22 since the all star break.

I hope the slob does not get his 2 year deal.  If he does, it will be another in a long list of mistakes by theo.  This morning I got sick when weei reminded me that we gave up Jason Gabbard for Eric Garne..

How are you Miscricket...interesting weekend..I guess I have more time on my hands..

Say mojo, you really hit the nail on the head with this one and completely trumped my Ralph Wiggums' responses.  If you don't mind, I'd like to use the Turtle kid as my default response to greatestNYY.  Heck, I like it so much that I'm going to use it even if you do mind.

it's not the derby.  it was the sporadic ABs in interleague, the break, and then the suspension. it's easy to lose your game timing when you're not playing.

    Re: Big Papi Hangover?

Other players hit after the break, ortiz has been a slow starter 2 out of the last 3 years, and has had issues after the break before.

Ortiz has always been one who needed a lot of at bats to stay sharp.  Precisely why he should not be signed here again.

If he gets signed he will once again come into spring training over weight.
