I would say Middlebrooks struggles surprises me most.

Although I do not expect it will continue.

I would also add that I am surprised that Lester has struggled lately.

The Red Sox becoming the first team in the AL to win 50 games and be in first place surprised me the most.  In 2012, the Red Sox won only 69 games.

Iggy wins hands-down.  I thought this could be his breakout year, but not like this.  I figured/hoped he'd show an ability to get his OPS into the .600's and show enough gap power for us to pencil him for 20-25 doubles a year.  I wonder where he'll land when the BABIP magic evaporates ...

Sox playing .600 ball and Lackey's come-back are tied for a distant second on the surprise list. I didn't expected the Sox and Lackey to completely stink, but I am surprised at the extent of their bounce-back.

Ditto. Never expected him to hit like this. Obviously it won't hold, but he's shown a pop (hmm ... an Iggy Pop?)  I didn't know he had.

For some reason, Lackey doesn't surprise me. This is how I expected him to pitch from day one, when I was really excited we signed  him.

    All surprises...mostly good ones.

It's been a good first half.

Forum surprises include softy pretty much disappearing with his tail between his legs (not too surprising I guess as he was wrong about most everything to do with this team except Iggy), Bill trying to turn over a new leaf as a respectful guy in here, and the lack of presence of Pike, who seems to be at a loss when the team he claims to be a fan of is doing well.

Should be a grear ride from here, we'll see.

    Go Sox!

Its a good list.....Iggy hitting .400 is of course a surprise, but not that he is soldified as a starter....Middlebrooks struggles are a surpirse, but considering he is a sophmore, it shouldnt be .....Nava doing as well offensively doesnt surprise me at all.....he is a guy who has hit at every level....his defensive improvement is somehwat surprising, but thats what hard work can do for a player....most of the rest are performances that are in the players general track records.....so even though I thought the Sox would be much improved ....winning 50 games before July would top my list

The overall success has surprised me the most. The fact is that most "experts" did not see this coming either. We were picked to finish close to .500 by many sportswriters at the beginning of the season. Other surprises: Iggy's ability to hit (for now anyway), WMB stinking, Lackey doing even better than expected, Carp playing very well, and the bullpen becoming a weakness when it was supposed to be a strength. Not surprising: Lester's failure to improve significantly from last year or Buchholtz's difficulty in staying healthy. Those were predictable based on recent history.

Good post Archer1.   I'm suprised to see how poorly the bullpen is doing.  I heard so many great things about them at the beginning of the season, not very impressed with them at this point.

The team doing this well is also a suprise but let's wait until after the all star break before we get too excited.

I think it goes without saying that Iglesias hitting is by far the biggest surprise. No one could have predicted that he would be hitting .400 at this point.  I am not surprised at the overall success of the team.  I said , coming out of spring training, that I thought this was a good team that had an excellent chance in the AL East.  They have somewhat exceeded my expectations.

    Stabbed by Foulke.

Re: Biggest Surprises of the 1st Half

I think Lackey is definitely the biggest surprise.

As for Iggy hitting over .400 this long, I would call that more of a phenomenon.  One of those oddities that occurs in baseball for a period of time and then vanishes again.  Which is not to demean him in the least.  His hitting is considerably better than expected and I hope he's our shortstop for a long time.

    1. Iggy hitting over .400...he hit .395 for the month of June. How long can he keep it up?

    2. Ellsbury with one home run

    3. Salty...drawing some walks

    4. Lackey pitching like an Ace.

    5. Middlebrooks and his problems offensively and defensively.

Dempster being much this much better than the rest of the Dumpster Brigade like McCarthy, Haren, Marcum and Edwin Jackson is a pretty big surprise.
