    BLOCKBUSTER??

Not only is BLOCKBUSTER a mostly defunct video store, it's also a mostly defunct concept in baseball  player movement. Yes, we had a "blockbuster" trade around here, last year. Let's see how that worked out? The Dodgers are in first, and the Sox are in second. Hmmmmm.

Are you suggesting the dodgers got the better end of the deal?

The Sox were in dead last last yr with a 48 yr low record, and had the best record in the AL until recently this yr via a historical turnaround, so this comment is ridiculous

No trade should be measured in the immediate afterglow, but should be seen through the prism of time. LA is much improved since the trade. The Sox too. Perhaps it's a win-win.

    Just a couple of things:

    1) The Dodgers are benefitting from a weak division this year.  If they were in our division they'd be 6 games behind us.

    2) LA has gotten nothing from Beckett and mediocre production from Crawford.  AGon is the only real plus for them from the trade.  Their best hitters during their hot streak have been Hanley and Puig.

Signing Grienke didn't hurt them either. In the end the deal worked well for the Sox and given the overall production of the three since the trade. I'd have to say it was the Sox that have gotten the better of the deal.

Yeah, because of Crawford, Punto and Beckett, the Dodgers are in first. I don't think Yasiel Puig was part of that trade.

    Re: BLOCKBUSTER??

Blockbusters can work, but always incur risks.  Last year's had the potential to help both teams.  The new Dodger owners had to show the LA fans they would spend to get good players immediately.  Ben C needed to get rid of a lot of salary and especially Beckett.  Napoli is no AGon, but he has been productive.   Victorino is a decent replacement for Crawford, and Ellsbury is back to being Ellsbury.  Farrell for Bobby V definitely helps, especially with Beckett on the other side of a continent.

Let's face it we got Salary Relief and a good lesson learned about long term contracts.

As far as players in return--Sands and DeJesus gone --Brock Holt in return.

Webster a decent min. league pitcher so far.

Jury still out on Rubby--probably the best bet of the four. I look forward to seeing him in Boston soon.

    Re: BLOCKBUSTER??

News flash: we're back in first. Of course, that could change today, because we are half a game ahead of Tampa Bay and we face them tonight. Gonzalez has produced for LA, but is not worth his salary at all. Beckett has been worth zero of however many million dollars worth of salary we dumped on LA, and Crawford has not done very well. We do not need any of those people- Crawford and Beckett can be replaced with two buckets of balls, and Napoli has produced fairly well at first, especially lately- not quite AGon-esque, but also not nearly the salary thanks to an injury clause. Overall, we just don't need those players. We're lucky that the Dodgers are willing to be dumping grounds for our overpaid, underperforming, and spoiled stars- you would think that, after Manny, the Dodgers would never do business with us again.

I thought this would be about the Red Sox inquiring on Cliff Lee and Michael Young. It would be nice if the Phillies price tag came down on them.

    Re: BLOCKBUSTER??

The Blockbuster you refer to from last year , is a Blockbuster in name only and in number of well known names included in the deal. What it was, rather than Blockbuster was SALARYDUMP, not quite the same. The Red Sox will reap the benefits of making this deal long after Beckett and Crawford are retired. This trade was about L.A. wanting to add some name players to the roster, namely Gonzalez. The Sox got all they would ever get out of Beckett, which was good for one championship ( certainly worth it!), but never realized the full potential of Gonzalez and Crawford( although , I believe Crawford's best years might be behind him, Gonzalez certainly not). Not quite sure how Punto figured in other than he is a good verstile player who fits better on a NL team.

Will you ever see a true Blockbuster trade again? Not likely. Free agency has more or less negated these type deals.

Would you consider the deal that sent A-Rod to the Yankees a Blockbuster?....only because , at the time, A-Rod was considered the premier player in the game. How things changed in such a short time, eh?...bet the Yanks wish they could have that one back....think of the money they would be saving right now. A-Rod is an insult to the franchise, an untradeable player, and a strain on their finances. The only way they dump him is to get lucky and hope he really did use steroids and lots of them.
