Sign Darvish, make Bard the closer.

Re: Bobby Valentine: Bard to be prepped as starter in spring

His numbers seem to fall off a cliff after 20-25 pitches and every year when he creeps closer and closer to 80 IP, he starts to fall apart. That's not talking about him having to dumb down his dominant fastball, not really having a third ML caliber pitch. Aceves is a better bet than Bard as a starter. I think it's been bandied about just because the Rangers are pretty much making a living off of converting old reievers to starters and vice-versa and it's a vogue thing right now.

Maybe if Oswalt's price isn't astronomical, they should grab him. He's going to bounce back big time next year.

I'm not sold on the idea of having Bard start. Aceves has past experience as a starter and even saw duty in long relief last year which should make him the better candidate. If the Sox don't pony up some cash for a closer and or at least one starter, they won't have enough Major league ready pitchers to fill the roster. Then what?

Re: Bobby Valentine: Bard to be prepped as starter in spring

With no moves this will probably be the 12 opening day pitchers:
    SP1 Beckett
    SP2 Lester
    SP3 Buchholtz
    SP4 Bard or Aceves
    SP5 Tazawa (Doubront/Weiland/Wilson) />>Dice-K in July?

    Closer Bard or Aceves
    RP2 Jenks (DL?)
    RP3 Doubront
    RP4 Morales
    RP5 Albers
    RP6 Miller
RP7 Atchison, Weiland, Wilson or Bowden

There's a lot of holes in this staff.

Every single spare penny should go towards finding better options than some of the names listed here.

    That leaves out Wastefield.

Both Bard and Aceves should move in rotation. 2 2nd tier pen arms need to be signed for pen.  After Miller, 1 or 2 under 40 veteran dumpster profiles need to be added at 1 to 2M plus incentives. Francis, Duchscherer, Harden, owings et al.

Red Sox will pay about 26 million for 3 top tier pitchers. Past time for them to finish a season in good form. That obviously excludes Slackey and Dicek. If these guys do not log the quality full season numbers in 2012, time to start seriously laying down some intense static.
