Why ridiculous? He has an issue that he needs to find out more. Go to one of the best in Ortho and get either a better answer than what he has or the same. Any smart person would do the same.

Yes ! Ridiculous!!! That issue should have been taken care of a month ago. There maybe something wrong but i think that baby Buch was in control and team should have demanded that he stop crying take his thumb out of this mouth and get it done with. Iwish they would dump his azz . I don't care how many wins baby boy gets.Iwould love to see this injury end his season  Give him a freaken teddybear and a suck suck.

I think it was handled the best it could have. Nobody thought it would go this way. There have been nothing on the MRI's to suggest any structural damage and they took the proper steps during his rehab. It has nothing to do with an incompetent med. staff. Dr. Andrews is a specialist and the best at what he does. This is the next logical step.

Im guessing that he had the bursitis already and just felt it more after sleeping on it awkwardly, so he though that was it. When nothing shows up on 2 MRI's, the logical thing to do is take it easy and slowly work back to a normal routine. Its now got to the point to where even though theres nothing on the MRI, they need to consult a specialist.

I have an opinion, too.   I have feared for Clay's ability to go deep into a season from his first back trouble situation.  Once one has back problems, myriad issues may appear somewhat related to the central nervous system.

I hesitate to share anything about second opinions with medicos ....

ever since I heard a joke about a fat guy who went to the doctor and received a prognosis he didn't like.  The patient huffily responded, "I'm gonna get a second opinion!"

The doc happily responded, "Well, my second opinion would be that not only are you tremendously overweight, but you are uncannily ugly as well."

You are correct regarding Buch In 5 of the last 6 years he has been on the DL. Our pitchers need to follow the example of Vic and Pedey because they play hurt. Pitchers must be in great shape, I know. Where is our bloody sock?

Re: Buchholz to see Dr. James Andrews for 2nd opinion

In all seriousness, it surprises me that the Sox don't have Dr. Andrews on a retainer.  He, obviously, is very well respected in his profession and having him on the retainer would avoid all the other opinions/diagnosis.

This would certainly save time and at the same time give the player a quicker feeling of piece of mind if necessary.

I don't know about you guys, but when you play a lot, something is always sore.  I think it was Nolan Ryan who said "hell, I pitched with a sore arm for years".

As long as Buch knew from someone in the know(Dr. Andrews) that nothing will be damaged, I say deal with it.

Hence, Dr. Andrews on a retainer would be money well spent.

Re: Buchholz to see Dr. James Andrews for 2nd opinion

Bucholtz is a good pitcher who is very brittle and does not have the body build fpr a pitcher who can hold up for a full season. He was hurt in 2011and missed a good chunk of the season and is hurt again and is missing a good chunk of the season. The  Red Sox should convert him to a reliever and forget him as a starter.  So glad the Red Sox Medical Staff said this was not major when he was initially taken out of a game early in June. This Medical Staff covers up more than the CIA.

Re: Buchholz to see Dr. James Andrews for 2nd opinion

Said this on another thread MRIs are only 93 % in diagnostics Ultra sound is 88%
Bursitis is the inflammation or irritation of the bursa. The bursa is a sac filled with lubricating fluid, located between tissues such as bone, muscle, tendons, and skin, that decreases rubbing, friction, and irritation. Bursitis is most often caused by repetitive, minor impact on the area, or from a sudden, more serious injury.

Bursitis can be treated in a number of ways, including:

    • Avoiding activities that aggravate the problem
    • Resting the injured area
    • Icing the area the day of the injury
    • Taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines

If the condition does not improve in a week, see your doctor.

Your doctor can also prescribe drugs to reduce the inflammation. Corticosteroids, also known simply as "steroids," are often used because they work quickly to decrease the inflammation and pain. Steroids  can be injected directly at the site of injury.  Injections are often, but not always, effective and can be repeated . However, multiple injections in a several month period are usually avoided due to potential side effects from the injections and the possibility of masking problems that need to be treated differently.

Physical therapy is another treatment option that is often used. This includes range-of-motion exercises and splinting (thumb, forearm, or bands).

Surgery, although rarely needed, may be an option when bursitis does not respond to the other treatment options.

So they have gone thru all of the above and are looking for a second opinion to see what is the next step IMHO. BTW no one should compare bursitis they have had with Clay as you do not throw a baseball every day.

This could be nothing more than being able to give Clay some peace of mind that he will not further damage his shoulder by pitching.  Clay stated that he could pitch if necessary.  This leads me to believe that the pain is tolerable and that he is not pitching due to fear of doing more damage rather than not pitching because of the pain.

Beckett had an issue with his elbow a few years back, and he got the reassurance from Dr. Andrews that he needed.

At any rate, the team has been doing fine without Buchholz in the rotation.  I'd rather have him take the time now and be healthy for the last stretch than have him rush back and not be able to pitch later.

Issue for a pitcher throwing with plain is the potential to change his delivery causing other injuries.

look we all complained for two years about Lackey pitching bad. Found out he had an injury he tried to pitch thru and in the end Dr could not believe he was pitching with the injury and he got TJ surgery. Now CBs injury may not be as bad but Lackey's probably started out small and ended up real bad. I do not want Clay going thru that.
