If the HIP, the big concern, becomes a problem, the risk has been factored in. Even if we ended up paying the guy the full 13 mil, due to chalking the injury up to some other issue, we are not obligated to keep him around.
Is this really that hard to understand. If the WORST happens, we have already freed up $8 mil in 2013, (13 - 5 paid = 8 mil for the really slow). PLUS another 26 Million for 2014 & 2015 under the ORIGINAL DEAL. YIKES!

He's also never played a full season at 1B. Take out the physical demands of catching 1/3+ of the season and i think he will hold up much better. but, like you said, We don't know how true that will end up being. We will see -

Can he? Yes. If he gets 596 ABs this season he should, according to his two-year average, hit 40 HRs. So he can. Will he? Probably not, even if playing in Fenway for 81 games means he hits HRs at an even more frequent rate than his 1/14.9 AB rate. Why? Because he will probably NOT get anywhere near the 596 ABs he would need. However, if he plays in 130-140 games and gets 450 or so ABs, he should hit 30+ HRs and that would probably make him the team leader in that category (unless Middlebrooks and Ortiz have great years, which would be fantastic, as the Sox would have 3 players with 30+ HRs).

In Napoli's first few years with the Angels he was sharing the catching about 50/50 with Jeff Mathis, even though Napoli was twice as good a hitter, because Scioscia loved Mathis's defence.It's only reasonable to use Napoli's numbers since 2009 when he first started getting more playing time.
Over the 4 years 2009-12 his averages are 119 games and 25 HR.

His power bats and high OPS in the Fens made Ben signs the guy even with hip concern. However, if Napoli can stay healthy and have abour 670-680 ABs, can he be that 40HR guy? His ABs have been limited due to his position and averaged about 324 ABs a season while hitting about 21 HRs. If he can have 680 ABs, Napoli will hit about 44 HRs mathematically. Is it possible for him to have a healthy year with his new role at 1B?
680 AB? Where did you get that Kool Aid? He's also been limited due to injuries. His power and OPS at Fenway was a miniscuel sample size against bad pitching. Over under on 24.

All of the power gauges, HR/AB, SLG%, .ISO show that he has 30 HR / 160 GP power. Probably more. I'm expecting about 130 games played and 25 dingers. Prorated 30 HR power.The power is there. THe durability is the only question mark. I love to hear that he is getting seen by specialists, the AVN was caught early, and he is undergoing treatment.

I hope that the Sox would've just walked away, if there wasn't a very good chance of Napoli's hip staying in one piece.If he can stay healthy, 30hrs would be reasonable.
If Ortiz can come close to his production of last year and also stay healthy, the Sox will have a formidable 3-4 tandem.

9th in SLG% over the last couple of years in the entire MLB. Draws as many walks as Pedroia.
There is nothing mediocre about his hitting (you just need to look at other stats as well as batting average).
The durability is a valid concern. Calling his stick mediocre is innacurrate.
