    Cherington's achiles heel

This team has one glaring weakness which hasn't been addressed by Ben in his 2 years as GM-top of the rotation starting pitching. For 2 years Ben has told the media that he has faith in the top of the rotation starters and we'll be fine. I don't see it. He is putting his faith in Lester and Buchholz; I strongly disagree. Therefore, I don't see this team making it to the playoffs. That is very unfortunate for me as a Red Sox fan.

    It is a shame.

I mean, all he has to do is fill out the right forms and get a tracking number, and then wait for the top of the rotation starter to be delivered to his doorstep...

So which free agents were TOTR starters this year? Which teams were looking to move their ace in a trade?

If Rubby De Le Rosa emerges as a TOR starter, will Cherington have fulfiulled his obligtion to you?

Free agency is a horrible way to get anything important.  The disadvantages outweigh the shrt term goals.  Free agency is not for building, it is for supplementing.

Grineke 25 mil wouldve been better than Drew/Victorino/Dempster/$$$pent

i think this was a huge mistake....the OP is correct - at the end of the day this team will be lucky to reach .500 with its current group of starters

I agree we need a TOR.

But you're not really answering the question.  Who are the FAs he should've acquired this year? One-time AS Greinke?

Agree with those saying, "who could you get?"  I mean King Felix just signed a mega-contract, but what else was out there?  Dickey?  Hey, I'm all for a starting rotation of in-their-primes Walter Johnson, Cy Young, Chrisy Matthewson, Lefty Grove, and Sandy Kofax - with a relief core of Rollie Fingers, Sparky Lyle, Goose Gossage, Dan Quissenberry, with Mo Rivera as our closer - thing is, there's nothing out there that even remotly resembles this august group.

And to be honest, I don't think King Felix as our TOR guy would help too appreciably.  Unless we get career years out of 3 or 4 regulars, we won't be sniffing at the playoffs - but, that's why they play the games.  GO SOX!

As part of their annual rankings of a team's top prospects, the trade publication Baseball America projects the Sox's lineup in 2016:

    C Blake Swihart
    1B Jerry Sands
    2B Dustin Pedroia
    3B Will Middlebrooks
    SS Xander Bogaerts
    LF Jacoby Ellsbury
    CF Jackie Bradley Jr.
    RF Bryce Brentz
    DH Garin Cecchini
    SP Jon Lester
    SP Clay Buchholz
    SP Matt Barnes
    SP Allen Webster
    SP Henry Owens
    Closer Rubby de la Rosa

Tough to count last Darvish, since we had no money.  And before last year, was Gio a TOR pitcher?  He had a 4.4 BB/9.

At the end of this, none of us will even agree on what comprises a TOR.

What contract (in terms of years and salary) should the Red Sox have given to what free agent top-of-rotation starter?

What players should the Red Sox have traded for what top-of-rotation starter?

    Be specific.

Many teams are looking for that top-of-rotation starter which, of course, drives up the price.

    Lester: 9-14, 1.383, 4.82
    Buchholz: 11-8, 1.326, 4.56

Those stats represent what the duo have accomplished since September, 2011.

No. 3 man, Ryan  Dempster pitched worse than Lester and Buchholz in the second half of 2012, compiling a 5.09 ERA and 1.453 WHIP for the Rangers.

Dempster has a lifetime ERA of 5.27 versus Toronto and 7.62 (with an 0-4 record) against the Yankees.

Doubront slipped badly (1-5, 6.04 ERA) in August-September.

And Jon Lackey -he has some of the worst ERA/WHIP numbers for a 150-Inning starter  6.41/1.619 in MLB history.
