Yes, and though it i a hindsight scenerio it would have been prudent to let Ortiz walk, and keep VMart as a DH/CA.

Nobody thought Vmart would decline this year. It's year's 3-4 of the deal that was the issue, and the fact that he wasn't a FT catcher anymore.

Re: Congratulations to VMart and His Detroit Tigers!

VMart has been a nice addition to the Tigers. I am so glad we didn't get Adam Dunn!

The poster, supra, wanted Adam Dunn.

VMart was a great fit on a 4 year contract. Wastefield and Varitek cost around 5 or 6 million and both are totally washed up.

The Beauty in keeping VMart was it fit perfectly with Ortiz and year to year contracts on Ortiz. VMart is best RH and a perfect compliment to current roster and Ortiz and AGon.

    VMart  2011  13M Catcher 110 games DH 22 games 1B 8 games  Age 32
    VMart 2012    13M Catcher 100 games DH 32 games 1B 8 games Age 33

Ortiz likely retired at this point:

    VMart 2013  13M C  100 games DH 42 games catcher 8 games 1B Age 34
    VMart 2014  13M C 100 games DH  42 games catcher 8 games 1B Age 35

As I wrote back last winter, VMart was an essential retention profile to balance the lineup to avoid the inconsistency big offensive lows. He also dovetailed perfectly with Ortiz retirement.

A solid veteran defensive catcher (hernandez) should have been acquired for late innings leads and about 60 plus games at catcher in 2011 and 2012. One of the bench players should be worked out enough to serve as emergency inning or two catcher until next day callup for any catcher injury after VMart pulled late in games.

Avila is one of the best young catchers in baseball, so Detroit found VMart a perfect fit for DH/B-up catcher. Had Detroit not gone 4 years, another middle market AL team would have picked up VMart as a catcher/DH/1B.

It is also noted that Buch preferred VMart as his catcher for 2012.

It appears like it's targeted toward VMART. But it's really meant for those who don't see how pitiful he is with pitching staffs. In this case, Softone started this thread to show how he advocated for the FO to retain VMART.

Congratulating a DH who didn't hit is his lame way of attacking Theo.
Softone will never admit to how catchers affect pitchers. In his warped mind..."Catchers has nothing to do with pitching".

Thus, he opts for offensive catchers and looks the other way when pitchers don't produce with them.

Always liked the gamer in VMART. Good bat, albeit streaky. The Tigers deployed him properly.

I agree. Tek should have played more in September.
It likely would have made at least a one-game difference...and a PO birth.

I have no contempt for Victor, like and admire him and miss his clubhouse presence.

That said, where was he supposed to play?  The DH here went 29/95/.300 (something like that).  VMart is great but he's no AGone, regardless if he's too quiet for you.  He cant catch anymore.  Where was he supposed to go?

And where was Beltre going to go?  You really think dumping Youk before the seaosn made sense?

Re: Congratulations to VMart and His Detroit Tigers!

How much less did Ortiz make in 2011? VMart led the league in BA with runners on...

145 games played, 40 doubles, 103 ribbies, .380 obp - all on a team that did not have Elles, Pedroia, Crawford types all through the line-up.

Ortiz who could never even pretend to play a game in the field...

146 games played, 40 doubles, 96 ribbies, .398 obp - of course he had 17 more homers than VMart but I am not seeing much of a difference here.

Bottom line is VMart is 4 years younger and likely will have these types of numbers for the next 4 years, after Ortiz is all but gone from baseball.

His OBP in this series is .385.

    3 RBI's in 5 game Yankee series.

2011 season long .330 BA and .380 OBP as DH/Catcher

Loser Timmy T-Ball and Varitek were zeros for 2011.

    Timmy T-Ball cost 3.75 Million in 2011
Varitek Cost 2 Million in 2011

Total cost for these two backbencher 40 pus year old losers was nearly 6 million dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Folks, any GM who contracted for those 2 losers should be fired!

Victor is having a dissappointing series to say the least. He has had numerous opportunities to drive runners in and hasn't gotten it done.
Now, there are also a number of other players of his caliber or better that have had a dismal post-season: Ryan Howard, Texeira, Michael Young....just to name a few.
Unless he is truly injured, he should start driving the ball like he can.

Agree that Victor has been very disappointing.  I still expect Detroit to win at least two of their home games.  They may be able to win all of them since Texas doesn't usually win many games in Detroit.
