Thank goodness some other GM decided to do something stupid.

He certainly did not deserve near top pitcher money at his age and injury history.

Must be that union slug thing.

they took a chance. if they didn't sign him and he has another big year he would be making more than that likely..

but it all looks good, he made every start last season (coming off of TJS no less) and with solid results: 3.94 ERA, 1.248 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 in 199 innings..

he is only 30 (so the deal has him until he turns 35) and his career numbers are fantastic 3.15 ERA, 1.211 WHIP, 130 ERA+.

i'd make that mistake every day...

If Wainwright got a nice payday this large, then imagine what Verlander or Kershaw will get.

I certainly would never have offered him something close to $98M, but I do wish he was on our team.

i would take that chance. a career ERA of just over 3 is pretty good... worth 20Mil a year? i think so, he also looks to have fully recovered from  TJS.

I am just not high on signing starting pitchers to elite contrscts that go past age 35...

I agree.  Maybe a $60M/3 would have been worth it next winter.

Any team that signs Verlander for 170 million is going to regret it. The only competent offer to Verlander is a 3 years for 100 million, with a player opt out for any of those years. If he wants insurance, he needs to pay for it.  Any GM that bucks will get the pink slip long before the write off payments are fully amortized.

    Try 7 for 180!

So, that's basically $70M for the last 4 years of a 7 year deal as compared to softy's $100M/3.
