    Cubs get Anthony Rizzo

    From MLBTraderumors.com:

    Cubs Acquire Anthony Rizzo

The Cubs have acquired first baseman Anthony Rizzo and right-hander Zach Cates from the Padres for right-hander Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na, the teams announced. The move provides the Cubs with a potential long-term first baseman and clears up first base in San Diego.

“The acquisition of Yonder Alonso provided us the flexibility to make this trade and acquire a quality, young power arm in Andrew Cashner,” Padres GM Josh Byrnes said. “We are happy to add a pitcher with the pedigree of Cashner and an outfielder with the athleticism of Na.”

The Cubs are presumably out of the running for free agent first baseman Prince Fielder with the acquisition of Rizzo. The trade reduces Fielder's leverage and he's not the only first baseman who has reason to dislike the deal. Bryan LaHair's chances of playing every day now seem slim.

But Theo have been trading away awful alot of pitchers lately!!  Soon Garza is on the way out.

It is like trading away Lackey, Bucholtz, Droubmont, few other pitching prospects!!

Why are the Cubs being allowed to trade away prospects before completing the Theo deal? If there isn't going to be any compensation they should just come out and say it.

There will be no major compensation for Theo. He was the GM of a team that finished 3rd two straight seasons and wasn't wanted by the Sox anymore. If the Sox had won the World Series last year, then this story would be different.

Compensation deal is more likely occurs after when all the arbitration cases are closed for both Boston and Cubs teams.  Then Boston will work out the compensation deal.  Wait until the spring training starts, and we should be able to find out who is the guy coming to Boston!!!

This was a trade only n idiot would make.  Its obvious the Padres ownership have very little baseball knowledge for allowing Byrnes to give Rizzo away.

He's young and has shown he can hit for power and average, but he hasnt proved himself at the major league level.  He should start the season at AAA unless he has a huge spring.

I dont want to call him a AAAA player but he needs to show he can hit major league pitching consistently.

Epstien thinks highly enough to trade for him a year after trading him away for Agon, so we will have to see if Theo knows what he is doing.

All trades can only be properly judged years in retrospect, certainly at least a couple of years.

By your standard, if Rizzo is still in AAA next July the Cubs will have lost.  By my standard, if in July 2012 he's hitting .200 in AAA but becomes a perennial all-star from 2013 the Cubs will have won.

    Re: Cubs get Anthony Rizzo

One of the problems Rizzo has is that his swing is too long. He will need to work hard on that regardless of what ballpark he is playing in. I agree, he may need some more work in AAA before he has a real shot in the Bigs. Otherwise the huge holes he has in his swing will hurt him badly. Yonder Alonso is a much better player right now, so I see why SD would make the trade, plus Cashner has some definate upside. Rizzo is one on Theo's Kids and he is very loyal to those he has annointed.

Cashner fits a need, Rizzo was a surplus.  But the Cubs traded away a young pitcher that was part of their rotation, they must be going for the 1st overall pick.

Yeah, I'm hoping the Wrigley Field janitor hasn't been taken off the table yet...maybe if Theo is in a generous mood he'll throw in the ball boy and the peanut hawker.

If you Google "Anthony Rizzo" and trade, you will find that many of the national pundits / scribes forecasted this trade a month ago. It makes sense for both teams.

The Cubs are the perfect example of breaking it down before you can build it up.  Rizzo is a good addition to what will be AAA cubbie north.  Theo was always pretty good at building the farm it is the FA that screw him up.  by the way,,, the RS compensation for him will probably amount to some kid trying to find an apartment in Portland for a long time.  Great town (my home town) but it amounts to a big whoop for the RS.

Before calling someone else an idiot you should realize that they traded Rizzo because they recently picked up Yonder Alonso who is better than him.
