Fun exercise: compare Ellsbury's career stats to Crawford's before he signed with the Red Sox.

About the same, except Ells gets hurt more  or did Crawford have better numbers at his age??

There is no way to spin this as "no big deal"

It's a big deal.  Regardlesss of the money - the sox now have a huge hole in OF and the Yankees now have a great CF.

Remember when sox tried to sign Bernie williams?  It never happens that way.  It's a one way street from Boston to NYY

    Steamer projections

    Jackie Bradley Jr.  2.3 WAR

    Ells  3.9 WAR

    ______________

    We lose 1.6 WAR

But Yanks gain double on us, so closer to 3.2 wins against us directly with this move.  Combine that with the 3 or so Wins they gained by signing McCann and that's a low 90s win team so far and we are now a 95 win team now... close enough to take notice... IF they keep Cano.

Mark my words this move makes no sense for the Yankees. They will regret this one in the long run. This is a stupid contract now I'm hearing a 8 th year option.

7 and $153 million for Ellsbury per @FeinsandNYDN. So better than Crawford.

Told #Yankees “still open” to Cano deal, although will be tougher to chisel him down after Ellsbury’s 7-year, $153 million.

the money does not matter.  The yankees just took our CF.

    This is a problem.

LOL!!!  Is anybody actually mad at this deal?  This cripples the Yankees for years.  $150M+ for a player who relies on speed and will be in his 30's throughout the whole contract?  When will they ever learn?

Doesn't take away from the fact that Jacoby is a d00sh, though.

2005: Johnny Damon: "I want to stay in Boston."  --> signs with Yanks

2013: Jacoby Ellsbury: "I want to stay in Boston." --> signs with Yanks

    Good riddance, sell out.

It doesn't matter how you spin it the Yankees now have one of the best centerfielders in baseball and speed on the bags with ells and Gardner. the sox do get a 1st round comp pick out of it but now have to fill a huge hole in the outfield and the bases. Let's not forget, money is no object to the Yankees, the just got better, we regressed.

    Forget the money.

The yankees now have an excellent CF for the next 3 seasons - they will worry about years 4 - 7 later.

Meanwhile the Sox have no CF and Beltran is signing with the Royals.

Victorino in CF is not a good option; especially if injuries are a concern

The Red Sox first-round pick remains at No. 29 because the Yankees forfeit only their second-round pick after losing their first-round pick with the earlier signing of Brian McCann.

I think the Yankees will retain their Nos. 32-34 compensatory draft picks if Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and Hiroki Kuroda sign elsewhere.

Nothing to like about this, but it is easy to understand. The Yankees way is always to spend the money to get to the top. They have 27 championships to show for it, so one cannot say that it doesn't work. As for Ellsbury, how can he turn down 153 million? Anyone would be crazy to turn that down. We may not like it , but it is a fact of life in baseball today.

Ellsbury played it just like Papelbon. Turned down every extension offer the #RedSox made, became a free agent and took the biggest deal.

Cue angry #RedSox fans blaming Scott Boras for Ellsbury deciding to hire him as an agent.

Sorry JBay I knew this was going to happen. Ben and Luchinno were cheap on this one, bad move as bad as Damon in 2006.

Dont be fooled they are going to sign Cano as well, don't ever trust Cashman or no chin when he talks about saving money for the luxury tax. Unreal.
