5-9 SPOTS ARE A DISASTER FOR THE RED SOX. LETS LOOK AT THECOLD HARD FACTS. ELLSBURY HAS LIMITED PLATE DISCIPLINE.PEDROIA IS SOLID, AGON IS A SOFT .325 HITTER, WHO WILL NOTHIT 30-40 DINGERS. PAPI WILL HIT HIS USUAL 30, BUT EVERYONEWILL USE THE SHIFT ON HIM , LIMITING HIS OUTPUT.AFTER THESE FOUR GUYS, THE REST OF THE LINEUP IS ACALAMITY. YOUKILIS, WITH HIS WEIRD STANCE AND BEATEN DOWNBODY IS WASHED UP. SWEENEY SEEMS OK, BUT WHO ARE WE COM-PARING HIM WITH ?? DREW ? CODY ROSS IS A SCRUB CASTOFF THATWAS PASSED ON BY THE MARLINS AND GIANTS. AVILES IS A CASTOFFWITH NO PLATE DISCIPLINE. SALTY JUST FLAT OUT CAN'T HIT A LICK;PUNTO IS A CASTOFF WHO CAN'T HIT A LICK AND SHOPPACH ISTHE SAME. THESE ARE THE GUYS WHO WILL GET US TO THE PLAYOFFS ?EVEN WITH THE NEW WILD CARD RULES....I THINK NOT. BOSTON ISBASICALLY A 4TH PLACE CLUB BECAUSE IT CANNOT SCORE RUNS.EVEN WITH DECENT PITCHING, THE OFFENSE IS SORELY LACKING. -

Posted by Bill-806Agree. It's dumb. No flexibility. And they are the only team in baseball doing so.By May 1, Thomas and Albers will be gone and Cook will be up and starting. -

We are going to see what Josh is made up of on Friday. We shall see, he was one guy I was expecting to make a statement this season and giving up 4 homeruns was not the statement that I expected. -

13 pitchers are a lot. I'm pretty sure, for example, that the Tigers are carrying just 11. And most teams carry no more than 12.
That said, the Sox have the worst pitching in MLB, defined as the worst ERA, right now. To me it makes sense to go overboard on the pitching until Valentine can decide who can help and who can't.
Ross hasn't done much at the plate, but he and McDonald are placeholders for Crawford and Kalish isn't ready yet. Sweeney is hitting the ball pretty good.
Lavarnway might make sense, but the price for that is that he won't play everyday and get much needed experience behind the plate. He could DH of course, but Ortiz is actually hitting pretty decently so far. That said, Shoppach and Saltalamacchia are both weak hitters so far, and reportedly Lavarnway in ST showed he had closed the catching gap somewhat. Lavarnway is like that old FRAM oil filter commercial--pay now or pay later. He clearly is the long-term fix at catcher, but moving him to Boston too soon might be a mistake.
Too early yet to make a call on Youk, who is very likely to come around and be once again a solid bat for the Sox. Ellsbury is also not hitting well, but replacing him would be crazy.
And then there's the highly touted Iglesias, who reportedly will instantly transform the pitching staff by catching everything hit to the left side, including dingers and shots headed for the green monster. Problem is, he is hitting .100 at Pawtucket. -

Ownership needed to be bold in the offseason and they were not. All the negativity and clubhouse issues seem to still be there. This team executes poorly in the field and while I know they'll start winning games soon ( simply too much talent not to) they can't be successful in the long haul if they can't resolve these issues. Lack of team chemistry will be the killer of this team mark my words. The sox brass could have used the epic collapse last season to justify hard decisions I.e. letting Beckett and Youk go and trading Ellsbury. Instead Tito was the fall guy and our team still stinks. -
