It's a great 'problem' to have isn't it?  I think Farrell has been going with the 'I'm playing whoever is hot' mentality' for the most part (Other than the Drew/Iggy situation).  I think he sticks with Bailey until he gives him reason not to.....which in my 'sofa GM' opinion is the right decision.  As for where to slot him.  I would put him behind Taz.....however I think you'll see him in the 8th to help give Taz some much needed rest.  Either way....it's a great 'problem'!!

The way the entire PEN is pitching, I would take Bailey & Hanrahan on an every other game rotation....... That way both arms get the proper work, but not ovaa-worked !!

Bailey should have the job. Baliey is a better pitcher.

If Hanrahan gets it back I wish him well, but I think it is a mistake. Stay with the guy that is hot.

I think there is not enough importance in Baseball on Pitchers who HOLD games. There is not a stat for this and should be, just like a save.
Many times they enter a game with men on base, and shut the Opponent down, which is huge. Most of the time a Closer enters a game with bases empty.

Re: DECISIONS! DECISIONS! HANRAHAN or BAILEY as closa?

It appears that we now have four holders/closers for three innings - not a bad situation to be in.

In my position as sofa/manager (Thanks, King <G>) I'd use some kind of a rotation that would allow Koji, Taz, and Hanny to work some combination of the 7th and 8th with two of them pitching and one "off" every day, and go with Bailey as the closer.

If one of the three proves they can't do the job they become the "odd man out" and maybe even become trade bait.  If Bailey proves HE can't do it the job goes back to Hanny.

When we're involved in blowouts (4+ runs ahead or behind after 6) either way, the other RHP's get time, and Miller becomes the lefty specialist out of the BP.

That's not 'in stone' but it's a pretty good framework.

Acutally there is a Stat for it....it is called a Hold. Currently on the Sox....Tazawa has 8 Holds, Uehara has 7, Bailey has 4 and Miller has 2.  Definition below

A hold (abbreviated HLD, H or HD) is awarded to a relief pitcher who meets the following three conditions:

    1. Enters the game in a savesituation; that is, when all of the following three conditions apply:
    (a) He appears in relief (i.e., is not the starting pitcher); and
    (b) He is not the winning pitcher; and
    (c) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
    (i) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and maintains that lead for at least one inning
(ii) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck
(iii) He pitches effectively for at least three innings.
    2. Records at least one out
    3. Leaves the game before it has ended without his team having relinquished the lead at any point and does not record a save.

They should work Hanny back in easy situations to get him going again. If Bailey stays hot, you obviously stick with him. Hanny can work the 7th-8th. I imagine at some point Bailey will have worked 3 days in a row and they'll want to rest him.

Based on one of my fantasy teams, I agree.

However, Hanrahan has been a good closer. Bailey has already shown he can excel in the eighth inning. So I'd give Hanrahan another shot as closer, put Bailey back in the eighth, and that would make this a deep bullpen because now the Sox won't need Urahura or Tazawa in the eighth. You have those two for the seventh (sixth-seventh when necessary), and Mortenson, Miller and Wilson for situational and fifth and sixth-inning stuff. Then wow, what a deep bullpen.

I suppose you could still have the same with Hanrahan in the eighth, but maybe he's better as a closer. Since Bailey has already been great in the eighth, I'd try Hanrhan as closer one more time.
