    Decisions Decisions

Although we are just completing the 1st month of the 2013 regular season, the Sox are going to have a number of decisions to make with the amount of players that will be rule-5 eligible this winter. Here are the names of the players eligible this winter out of the top 60 prospects in the organization, MiL FA not included...

    Xander Bogaerts SS #1

    Bryce Brentz RF #6

    Garrin Cecchini 3b #7

    Anthony Ranaudo SP #13

    Brandon Workmnan SP #14

Keury De La Cruz OF #17

    Brandon Jacobs OF #18

    Jose Vinicio SS #21

    Jeremy Hazelbaker OF #25

    Michael Almanzar 3b #27

    Kolbrin Vitek 3b #34

    Chris Hernandez SP #35

    Kieth Couch RP #41

    Miguel Celestino RP #42

    Heiker Meneses SS #43

    Juan carlos Linares OF #44

    Kyle Stroup SP #45

    Peter Hissey OF #54

    William Cuevas SP #55

Thats 19 names in the top 60, about a third of them will be eligible to be picked up by any team this winter. Now, they will have to be put on the teams everyday roster so some of the names that are in the lower levels should be Ok, while teams like Houston, Miami etc., can possibly afford to carry a young player they think has potential. Some of them will most certainly be protected, some could be on the 25-man roster, but all in all there will have to be some very tough decisions to be made.

Lots of decisions for Ben to make this year for possible deadline deals, and this winter.

So who stays, and who goes?

Considering they did not protect Hazelbaker last year, it is a safe bet to use him as the cutoff for protected players...

    Re: Decisions Decisions

There are some obvious keepers:  Bogaerts , Ranaudo , Cecchini , De La Cruz , maybe Brentz and a couple of others.  You cannot keep everyone. If we are in contention at the trade deadline , we could package a few prospects for a needed player.

This is another reason why I thought we should have made some 3 and 2 for 1 deals early in the past winter.

Like i said Moon, I think BC wanted this year to get a better picture of who he wanted to keep. A lot of these kids were moving up to AA and AAA, also a few to High-A salem. It was smart, IMO, to keep most of them and A) let them gain more value, B) be kept around as part of the future, and C) just to get an overall better picure.

I believe, like i said to you over the winter, there could very well be some moves at the deadline, whether were right in the thick of things, or out of it. Also this winter before the rule-5 draft in December there will surely be a couple moves.

Heres a list of current players that I dont think will be returning as of right now, or will not be protected and cut from the 40-man roster

    Drew

    Hanrahan

    Aceves

    Uehara

There are some that are unclear right now, but are certainly possibilities.

    Salty

    Bard

    Mort

    Butler

    Lavarnway

    Carp

    Ciriaco

    Holt

    Naps

    Hassan

There could be a lot of spots opening up depending on the performances of our prospects and some current players. Also any deadline deals to be made. I also think that another SP will be gone to make room for Webster next year. Not sure who though. My guess would be Doubront since hes still young, under control and has some value to teams. Lackey could also be of some value if he pitches well and with that extra year at 500,000. Maybe even Demp if the right deal/situation presents itself.
