Do the Red Sox players owe the fans an apology for Thursday's performance?

Peter Abraham in his article today strongly suggests that the players on the field did not show up to play;they just went through the motions. Do they owe us an apology?

The American League East at the start of play today:

    Yankees: 17-12
    Rays: 17-14
    Orioles: 14-16
    Red Sox: 14-17
    Blue Jays: 14-17

For all of the ups and downs and maddening moments of the Red Sox season — and yesterday was damning evidence that sometimes this team just decides to take a day off when there's no day off — they are four games out with 131 games to play.

That's the good news. The bad news is the Yankees are 17-12 despite all manner of issues include the decline of Derek Jeter, the loss of No. 2 starter Phil Hughes and poor starts by Jorge Posada, Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher. They're going to get better.

The Rays have Evan Longoria back and they're going to get better. The Orioles and Blue Jays, still adjusting to life under new managers, could get better, too.

The Sox are 12-7 in their last 19 games and that's great. If they continue to play at that pace, they'll win 96-97 games and that should be enough to make the playoffs. Playing .632 baseball for five months is ridiculously hard. But when you start 2-10 amid great expectations, that's the position you're in.

Somebody should remind the Sox of that. They've lost the right show up on Thursday for a day game after a long night game and think, "we'll get the Twins on Friday."

Because that's how it looked yesterday.

It's still early in the season. But it's too late for the Sox to think everything is back to normal and they can afford a few turkeys here and there. They can't.

Mr Abraham should realize that a lot of the Red Sox roster has flu like symptons and aren't feeling at their best.A long night coupled with an early start is probably not the best scenario for players who are feeling under the weather.
Time for the panic to stop! It's May and the Sox are only 4 games out of first place.

Maybe Inepstein should go on an Obama-style Apology Tour for signing John Slackey, the biggest bust in free agent history.

Agreed...these 11-0 stinkers will happen from time to time even to the best teams. Nothing to get worked up about. You just move on.

well, SLACKEY should apologize for cashing his paychecks after most of his starts.
THEO should apologize for allowing SLACKEY to even have a RED SOX paycheck.
TITO should apologize for pretending to be a field manager.
DREW should apologize for cashing most of his paychecks.
THEO should apologize again for allowing DREW to even have a RED SOX paycheck.
but on this BOARD, most of the posters APOLOGIZE for the players, manager, and GM.

I was at the game.  My NYY fan friend emailed me while I was stuck in the miserable traffic leaving:

Did they give out refunds at Fenway?

I think the posters who use Dick Cheney and Glenn Beck pictures for avatars are the ones who should apologize.

Fans don't deserve any apology, never have, never will. You can feel disappointed and heartbroken but you are a fan at your own risk. You are entitled to nothing. If you watch the game or listen to it on the radio and they lose then you are stuck paying for a dime of electricity and you probably would have been watching someting else anyways. You get disappointed and your next door neighbor who hates baseball is his normal happy self. You bring your misery onto yourself by choice. On the reverse side of the coin is hoe ecstatic you are when they win ( unless your name is Andrewmitch or Softlaw). If you want a steady level of happiness the mimic your neighbor. If not be a fan and get used to the ups and downs. Are you aware that only one of thirty MLB teams wins the World Series, don't bet your mortgage on that.
