I do agree. IMO Henry and LL have BC spin their new strategy of holding the line, and doing everything to not get burned again with a long term bust conract. The latter piece of the strategy is easily delivered by simply not signing anyone long term. The Luxury Tax issue may or may not be real. DS states the money is there, but with all Henry is spending on soccer and NASCAR it is possible his Finance advisors are saying stop. DS is clearly spot on in that the Rangers, Angels and Yankees have gotten better while we have not.

Not sure how going into any year with a rotation featuring Beckett, Lester and Buccholz and a lineup featuring Ellsbury, Pedroia, Youkilis, Gonzalez and Papi and a backend of a bullpen featuring Aceves (if he is not a starter), Melancon, and Bailey is anything remotely akin to "giving up on a year".

Thanks Space.  While it is certainly far from an ideal roster, it should be a very exciting season.  Does Bard have what it takes to start in the AL Beast?  Watch veterans put it all on the line, fighting for a starting job!  Is this the year that injuries cause the left side of our infield to get a makeover?  Can Ells play right-center field and have 2 spots in the lineup?

All this and more once the 2012 season gets underway!

Amen JB.  I love the question marks.  People are going to fighting for their lives this year, and that is something we haven't seen in a while around the friendly confines.  D. Bard.  What will you do?!?

Space,  I believe you are correct.  For the first time in a long time players will be playing with purpose.  Even Ellsbury has a lot to play for and for this team it's about time.  As I have said many times, Theo has handcuffed this team with large contracts that haven't amounted to much.  Because of that a new approach to baseball operations was and is needed.

As for us fans, we should not feel entitled.  Half the population says that its monopoly money so no big deal, the other half says ticket prices are 2 high.
Until operations change that statement will stay true.

Bring them to camp and let them play baseball.  Let them fight for something for a change.  I for one, Like it.

Re: Do you agree with Shaughnessy-"Sox not spending? We aren’t buying" or do you agree with Ben?

The Sox have a fistful of bum contracts (Lackey, Crawford, Beckett etc) left over from the previous GM. The team as presently constituted wil be competitive. Remember, they only have to finish 3rd to accomplish what the big spending of the past two years has produced. Let Ben start the year with this team and he can see where the holes actually are before the trading deadline.

As most coaches, managers, and GMs will tell you (regardless of the sport) all a team has to do is get into the tournament and anything can happen. Soon, if not this year (and school is still out on that) there will be more teams in the playoffs. The Sox need to get rid of some of their bad contracts via trade or expiration before thrpwing more money after bad results.

Likely, this is Papi's last year (unless he has a monster season or signs a two year contract for reasonable money), Dice K is finished this year. Kalish will come on board (a low cost option for right field). Bard might be a serviceable starter. One of the junk heap that signed contracts might be adequate as a starter (Silva, Cook, et al) until Dice K returns. Dice K may respond well to Valentine ( a Japanese hero) and is playing for a new contract with Boras as an agent. There are myriad possibilities. The Rangers, Angels, and Yankees look pretty good. Toronto and Tampa should not be dismissed, but the Sox are not the MLB version of the Celtics. Let's see how the season plays out.

the RS have made a decision not to compete this year, Is thats a good decision or bad? I don't really know.

The one thing I'm sure of is that the RS are paying (pardon the pun) for the past sins of bad signings, (you can insert which ever name you think is a bad signing)

But you do have to ask yourself a question, Why do teams like Tampa Bay and other teams seem to make great decisions while the RS resign players like ortiz this year?

That would be a funny question to ask.  Ortiz hit 309/398/554 last year.  How many players on Tampa Bay reached any of those numbers last year?

    Zero.

The key word is 'seem'.  It 'seems' that way because you are picking apart everything the Red Sox do, and not really paying attention to what the Rays do.  i guarantee if you were a Rays fan the way you are a Sox fan (as in: a Sox fan who would consider re-signing one the highest OPS guys in th league as a bad move), you would be up in arms that they dumped Johnny Damon and essentially replaced him with the much less versaitle Luke Scott.  But, it just doesn;t matter to you, so you don't notice.

How exactly is Beckett a "bum contract"?  Last year was the first year of the new deal and he had a sub-3.00 ERA in 193 innings.

If chicken and beer are what it takes to get that kind of performance out of him, then I'm all for it.  Just make sure he's working off those extra pounds throughout the season next time.

Yeah JB.  I do not think chickengate is much of an issue.  But, if the extra pounds incurred from too much summertime chicken and beer was at fault for bad ankle, then I concede that maybe chicken and beer may not be the best course of action for optimum performance.  I do not mean to come across as too dismissive of the chicken and beer saga.  I only make light of chicken and beergate when people are ready to ditch the best Red Sox pitcher to the curb over it.
