Nah....six foot two inches is tall enough.
If this was basketball , I'd say maybe. It would depend on how many 3 point shots he can make. -

He is such a liability with base runners I just don't know if it can be justified. We all know he can't hit anymore. We all love Tek and I wouldn't mind seeing them retire the 33 but I think it is time. Maybe he will retire. -

Son I'm not saying you have to go home, but you can't hang around here anymore. -

sign him up as bench coach so he can take over for Tito when he's gone.

Some players don't know when they're done or refuse to admit it.
Varitek should return as a coach. -

If we re-sign Papi, we should not re-sign Varitek. If Papi walks, we should bring up Lavarnway and carry a third catcher, in which case Tek would be fine. Lavarnway and Salty can split time at catcher / DH - Tek can catch Beckett, but for god sake pinch hit for him after the 7th. -

The Red Sox are 41-22 in Varitek's starts this year after 18-9 last year. I believe he has a positive effect on the run prevention side in spite of his problems throwing out baserunners. I would like to see him back for another year, maybe with a reduced workload.
The real question is whether Salty can cut it as a #1 catcher. -

But where the issue lays is if you believe that Lavarnway or another farm hand could come up and be the primary guy should an injury happen to take down Salty for an extended period of time.
Forget the offensive production, Tek's body can't handle every day PT. Anybody remember how hobbled Tek looked before the end of the 16 game marathon in Tampa or how he still was visibly impaired in his next start two days later?
The RS were fortunate that Salty panned out and did not get hurt. Finding a decent catcher able to catch 3 out of every 5 starts in the open market once the season begins is very, very hard. -

No clearly done and cannot hit. He was no help to the pitching staff especially Lackey down the line in September with his "game-calling". -

I hope they extend him 3 more years so we get quality posts like this from Softhead
1 more year to help Salty, less playing time for Jason would help both of them out at the end of the year. -

Jason isnt playing much, and is about 1 for 35 in the last weeks of the season. His CERA is also a joke.
hernandez should be signed to a one year FA deal. -

Among pitchers with 100+ PAs with both catchers:
VTek 6- Salty 1
hernandez should be signed to a one year FA deal.
You mean the guy with 3 straight years of a higher CERAs than Ryan Hanigan?
Gotta love his CS% though.
That will make up for about a 0.75 higher ERA! -

Nice to see VMart part time catcher and hitting career averages. Best Red Sox citizen ever. Tigers have a great young catcher, so VMart fit well.
Red Sox staff stinks, overall. Playoff format will help diregard laughing stocks like Wakefield and Lackey.
VMart and a solid veteran defensive catcher would have won this team several more games. -

You are proving your idiocy with every post.
An 8 game sample size with a staff decimated by injuries is "proof" to the silly clown. -

We make a trade, just like we did when VMart got hurt last year, or we'd roll the dice with Lavarnway. -
Re: Do you extend Varitek?

Then you would risk what you have set as the gold standard to successful catching - CERA.How many catchers would be of quality and readily available to be traded for, probably zero.We have to move on at some point, why wait is what I say.I am ready for 2012 already. -

Opposing pitchers laugh when he comes to the plate and opposing players salivate when they reach base with 'Tek behind the plate. He's a symbol of the past from which it's time to move. Nostalgia doesn't win games. If he's such a great signal caller, let him do so as a bench coach.
