I hate seeing Gonzalez and Crawford go, but the Sox are picking up two high quality arms.

It is very important for the Sox to stock the system with as many good , young , hard throwing pitchers as possible. I think that is more important than breaking the bank for an " ace."  We already have several good , young position player prospects , who should be ready before too long.  ( Iglesias , Bogaerts, Bradley and Brentz. )  But , other than Barnes , we do not have much young pitching. That is the key to long term success , while keeping the payroll flexible.

It's hard to imagine the Sox are sending 4 MLB players- some of them star players, for one MLB player and 4 AAAers.

De La Rosa and Webster are two of the top three pitchers in their system.

    Bleacher Report said this

The Red Sox rotation could be as follows in 2014

    Webster
    Buchholz
    Lester
    Barnes
    Workman

They are top prospects and it's $60M per year. Insert Felix Hernandez in rotation in 2014.

You guys don't seem to understand that it's as much about getting rid of the contracts to free up money as anything else. Gonzalez was a great player, but neither he nor Crawford fit in here, and neither has done what was projected of them. Time to move on and have money to spend more wisely on players that will fit the need and perform.

Felix Hernandez remains under team control through 2014 when the Mariners could be ready to contend. I question whether a rebuilding Red Sox team could make a credible trade offer.

The disappointing James Loney, who is now 28 years old, is the only player in the rumored Dodger package who was ever considered a top prospect. The only other player who was ever ranked among BA's preseason Top 100 was 22-year-old Allen Webster, who came in at No. 95 this year.

The Dodger package is not particularly young with Loney at 28, Ivan DeJesus at 25, Jerry Sands at 25 next month, de la Rosa at 23 and Webster at 22.

Frankly, I don't like the rumored trade from either side.

have you lost your mind?????? beckett and crawford packaged for young arms and youre against it? have youve been in a coma this year???? the only way this deal makes sense for the Dodgers is if some photos of farm animals and midgets have ended up in ben's hands.....can you imagine anyone in LA that thinks getting Beckett and Crawford (Agon yes...) is worth 40 mil a year?????

All depends upon how the money saved is spent in the coming years. I like AG too, but he just isn't as clutch as he was advertised. My immediate fear for 2012 centers more around AG and FC going to LA and hurting the Reds THIS year. Who cares what they do after that? We can only hope that this trade is part of a larger mind set that involves rebuilding the team closer to what it was in the 2003-4 years. Less big name players, and more players that will get the job done, and better SP.

i prefaced it with money aside, exam.  Spend wisely on players that will fit and perform?....how do you know that? only way this makes any sense is, if they dont want to be here. if and when the prospects dont pan out, then what??

well, they can now free up money to sign players like Josh Hamilton, Gavin Floyd and Napoli.

Imagine Boston resign Ross, and then sign Hamilton and Napoli.

Line up would be like this: Ellsbury, Pedy, Hamilton, Napoli, Ross, Middlebrook, Lavarnway/Salty, whoever play SS (Ciriaro?) and Loney

Re: Dodgers have agreed to send Allen Webster, James Loney, Jerry Sands, Ivan De Jesus, and Rubby De La Rosa for Adrian Gonza...

One thing is clear.  The FO may still want to get a new manager, but right now they firmly believe the biggest problem is with the players.  Beckett for sure, a malcontent who basically does what he wants.  AGon is absolutely not a problem, but he is the sweetener to make Beckett go down.  Crawford is I think a good guy with talent but who just might be out of place in Boston even though he looked good the past month.

Crawford's departure makes it possible to re-sign Ells even though he may still opt to leave.  That said, Youkilis, the player who maligned Ells publicly in 2010, and Francona, the manager who distinctly refuse to defend Ells in any way, are both gone.

The Sox are going to have to pay some of those salaries, but hopefully not too much.

First base is now going to be a big hole.  AGon was a gold glover, the team's must productive hitter, and a guy who played 160 games a year for like six seasons. The Sox haven't had anybody like that in a long time.   He was headed for 20 dingers this year, which would have been plenty for me given his high RISP average.

This trade underscores beyond a doubt how badly the Sox FO wants to dump Beckett.

His overall numbers are not bad, even this year. The trouble is, he just doesn't get the big hits when you need them. His RISP is very deceiving, he rarely gets a big, late inning hit when you need it.

Signing Elles to a Crawford'esque contract would e a mistake. I will miss AGon dearly. Crawford, well his salary and performance won't be missed. Beckett? Later g8tor.
