    Dream team...who is on it?

If you could put together a dream team so to speak.....

    Who would be on it?

    Who would coach?

Where would your home field be?

What would you name your team?

    2B - Rogers Hornsby

    1B - Lou Gehrig

On this sort of team I might choose Rickey Henderson to play LF to get the best leadoff hitter and baserunner on the field.

    3B: Mike Schmidt.
    SS: Honus Wagner.
    2B: Rogers Hornsby.

    P: Steve Carlton.

    Bench:
C: Bench or Berra, who ever doesn't start.

I have a hard time putting players from the deep past in the same boat as those of recent decades for the following reasons.  I personally didn't get to watch them play, while the game, quality pitching and pitches, Artificial turf, implementation of the DH among other things has really changed the game.

Mine would go more like this if we were all still including the present day DH ....

Not a bad team for a more present-day team. I'd have to give it some thought if I were to do the same. After all these years, I still can wrap my head around Carew being a 1B. I think Carew gets a bit overlooked as an all-time great, and I think it's because he moved to 1B but wasn't a powerhitting 1B. Had he stayed at 2B, he'd be though of more easily as one of the best 2B of all time.

    roy,

Carew was never really a power hitter but could hit any pitcher anywhere, time or place.  Sandberg was the big bat at 2B.  I put my team together based on OBP, BA, SLG and who I liked best defensively at their positions that met other criteria.  I was on the fence between Brett and Robinson at 3B because Brooks really made some great plays but wasn't the best defender at the position on paper.  Brett was a much better hitter but also not a great defender.

That's why I like Schmidt. He was better defensively at 3B than Brett and a better hitter than Robinson.

drama is good sometimes. I also liked Rick Honeycutt from the left side to.. know where near Plesac or Franco of course. I tried to think of my pen with power arms from the 6th inning on. With of couse some LHP vets. Wettland for about 2 years was a solid pitcher then flamed out. I also would but in there JUAN Berngauer( Senior Smoke). I like the strategy in the late part of the games mixing and matching. Do you turn him from the right side or left. The hit and run get that SS TO TAKE TWO STEPS OVER FROM THE BAG TO LEAVE THAT HOLE OPEN. The pitch counts love it. When their is a slow runner on first not having the first baseman holding him on play in front of him. I remember when Bobby Valentine wasin the NL with the Mets he use to throw over to first if the pitcher got on to wear him down, cheap move but they do it

Re: Dream team...who is on it?

This is the sort of thread where WAR is an interesting discussion point.  I just checked Pedroia's career fWAR....he's averaged 5.03/year throughout his career!  That's huge.

Yes, yes, yes....WAR is flawed.  But how else do you begin to compare players from different positions, eras, parks, leagues, etc?

Let's compare and contrast Yaz to Pedey:  overall, Yaz averaged 4.12 fWAR/season...but that's not fair as it includes a long slow decline that Pedey has not/may not endure.  Yaz' last big year (5.0 fWAR) was 1977.  So eliminating 1978-1983 it leaves Yaz at 5.11 average fWAR.

That seems about right, IMO.  Yaz was on the baseball Mt. Olympus from '67-'70 so his 4-year peak was higher than even Pedey's greatest season, but overall?  They are not that far apart.

Finally, the Ted?  Leaving out his ruined seasons in '52/'53 and his last two seasons (even though in '60 he was 3.4 fWAR)....his average fWAR was 8.29!

That also passes the sense test....by any reasonable standard the Ted is miles ahead of both the others...but the other two are not that far apart.
