You say that as if he committed an error or didn't get a clutch hit, that cost them the game. Drew was smooth at SS. didn't miss a step. It will take him time offensively, as expected. Masterson pitched well.

Gomes blew this game--if anyone did--when he stood there and took two pitches right down the middle with the bases loaded in the first, then took strike three for good measure. AWFUL at bat, no excuse for taking three fastballs for strikes with a 3-0 count and the bases loaded. Dumb. That 3-0 pitch was an absolute cookie right there, should have gone for a GS. I thought Drew looked pretty good considering.

And he nearly got it.  I don't have a problem with that, especially with Masterson's control problems up to that point, except for not protecting the plate with two strikes.

bases loaded your approach should be to drive the ball somewhere hard.  not working the count for a walk.  bases loaded the pitcher has no margin for error.  and then he is up 3-0 in the count?  expect nothing but FB middle-middle.  he got 2 in a row and should have put a good swing on at least one of them.  once it gets 3-2 you still have to expect FB and he got it.  middle-bottom of zone...no way you can take that pitch.  TERRIBLE ab.  after a weekend of terrible defense.  Gomes needs to sit for a day or 3.  IMO of course.

Agree.  It's not like Masterson snapped off a nasty curve or slider.  I wouldn't have like a called strike 3 with one of those, but it would be a little more understandable.  This team overall takes waaay too many called 3rd strikes on fastballs.

It isn't like Drew was the only player to go hitless. Most knew he would struggle at the plate.  The only thing you could pick apart defensively would be his tags, and those plays could have gone either way and did not cost runs.

Watching him play short and the way he turns dp's, shows even more that Xander is not a short shop.  At least he is not as long as Drew is on the same team.

Somebody has to drive in runs. What good is having good OBPs if you don't score runs?   It takes four walks to score one run. I am tired of hearing that a walk is as good as a hit. Sometimes it is. Many times, it is not. Bases loaded, fastball coming, SWING THE BAT.

    Stabbed by Foulke.

Mistake? Drew was signed, rightfully so, when Bogaerts was having a tough time at shortstop. Time will tell if Holt can continue on the pace he's on, how well Bogaerts does at 3rd and where WMB fits into it, if at all. Nava is the more than likely the player who is traded. Holt can be  super utility player, if he can play 1sr, 3rd, and the OF. Between injuries and days off, it usually works itself out.

Funny, when Lester shut out the RAYS, no one said the RAYS  bats were dead. But when the SOX get beat, it's never that the opponent's pitcher was dominant, it's because the SOX bats suck.

That being said, yes, the SOX do need an OF who can hit a baseball. Where they can find one, that's the multi-million dollar question.

That is what I am saying...there isnt a good hitting OF out there unless Boston is willing to take over-paid waste contract OF like Kemp or Crawford.

IF these teams want to give away a good hitting young OF like Springer or Stanton, they must be so dumb!!!!!

Free agency is over, and wait until the trading deadline.  Top OF heading to next season as a free agent are Soriano, Melky Cabrera, Nelson Cruz, etc.  I can not foreseeing these guys in the same division to be traded to Boston.

Seriously, if Ben C ever want to spend money for OF for next season, he better not cuz they all sucked!!

That is why Ben C best option is to make a trade or just stay pact and rely on farm system players!!

You're not seeing any red flags with Kemp?  Like games missed since 2012, or his OPS for 2013 or 2014, or the fact that the Dodgers moved him out of centre field?

He might be worth taking a gamble on, but not if we're paying a big chunk of his salary.

He's infinitely better than anything we have now.  then again, aren't you the one who said you like what you see in JBJ's swing?  anyways, I'd do 5 1/2 @ 99 (w/ the Dodgers picking up the balance; ~ 3+ mil/yr) and giving them 1 mid-tier prospect.  i wouldn't use him in CF on a regular basis but it's nice to be able to use him for times when we PH for JBJ in late innings against a LH Specialist........

Re: Drew just in time . . .

Some pretty good comments taking umbrage with my OP which is, I agree, a little extreme.  I simply disagree that he will bring much value to a team badly in need of hitting, especially by the outfield.  If Holt keeps hitting, my prediction is he will go to the outfield when Napoli returns to 1B.

I was also mad at Gomes for doing nothing with the bases loaded.  However, were I the manager I would probably have wanted Gomes to do what he did--hope that Masterson couldn't get that third strike.  Why?  Because Gome's OPS against righties is horrible and his batting average is like under .200.  He can't hit righties and should not start against righties.

I was a big Drew fan last year because I thought he played an excellent SS and his OPS was like .770.  Good value.  This year, however, I am fine with Bogaerts at SS, errors, range, and all.  His overall WAR value makes him the third highest ranked SS in the AL.  More to the point, the Sox need hitting right now a lot more than fielding, and the infield hitting is pretty good.  I would far rather Cherington had gone after a good hitting outfielder even though I suspect none can be had right now.  So Drew is better than doing nothing and maybe he can be traded to get a hitting outfielder.

No, I've never said anything about JBJ's swing.

But 99 mill seems like too much money for the 2014 version of Kemp.
