You know, I'm case anyone is interested in a player who has gotten worse 3 straight years in BA, OBP, SLG, HR, RBI, K%, BB% and WAR.
But he does make more money now..

Too bad he's righthanded.

How much worse could he be if he tried hitting left-handed?

Use fellow righthand-hitting outfielder Jonny Gomes as a point of reference for Drew Stubbs (who is four years younger than Gomes):
Wins Above Replacement*
JG 2010: -0.1, 2011: 1.5, 2012: 2.1, Career: 6.2 in 880 games
DS 2010: 4.0, 2011: 2.6, 2012: 1.3, Career: 9.3 in 486 games
Gomes will earn $5 million in 2013 and another $5 million in 2014. Stubbs will earn $2.825 million this year in the first of his three arbitration seasons.
The trends favor Gomes, but one could argue that the Red Sox bought high on the new Sox leftfielder.

Or Michael Brantley could be availble for Gomes platoon partner since Kalish will miss significant time this season.

Tampa would be able to outbid Boston for Brantley, as they could offer Jeff Niemann or Alex Cobb..

The Sox might have some serious issues vs RHPs this year. We have only 2 guys with career OPS over .821 vs RHPs, and one hardly ever plays more than 120 games a year (Naps).
We have 6 guys over .824 vs LHPs.
The 2013 Sox have some serious lefty-righty split differentials:
Career OPS
vs RHPs vs LHPs Diff
Salty .774 .591 .183
Ortiz .972 .824 .148
Nava .768 .621 .147* (small sample size)

Will Venable had a .898OPS vs RHP away from Petco and is .838 for his career against RHP away from Petco.
Go get, Ben...

Lefthand-hitting firstbaseman/outfielder Mike Carp, whom Globe columnist Nick Cafardo has mentioned as a potential target, could be available after the Mariners designated Carp for assignment:
However, the Red Sox may have filled that role with Washington State native Lyle Overbay.

Ha, yeah, remember when we used to complain about how this lineup was far too heavy on the left side and vulnerable to left handed pitching?

Which brings us full circle to the question of why so many people wanted to beef up our lineup against lefties, by acquiring Upton, when a LH backup 1B/corner OF was probably a much better fit.

That theoretically works out to .811 against righties and .834 against righties. Last year, the NYY had a .797 v righties and a .777 against lefties. The Rangers had .775/.793 split. Our OPS will slide on injuries, but it doesn't seem too far out of line with the best offenses.

Acquiring Upton would have meant no Victorino and/or Gomes (both much better vs LHPs), so it would not have tipped the scales the wrong way, since Justin is much better vs RHPs than either of those two. He would have brought balance and filled a need for a solid 3-4-5 type hitter that can't be pitched around by bringing in a RH'd or LH'd relief pitcher.

Id take Carp over Overbay.
Carp was my second most-sought after Mariner among the realistic targets, behind Smoak.
