Epstein on the Red Sox: 'You don’t want to dig a hole you can’t climb out of'

Stopped by the Business of Baseball panel discussion today at The State Room. The event benefited The Foundation To Be Named Later.

Peter Gammons moderated a panel that included Theo Epstein, Sox COO Sam Kennedy, MLB Players Association executive director Michael Weiner, MLB Network president Tony Petitti and local business heavyweights Joe Preston of New Balance and Chris Wallrapp of Hill Holliday.

Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard also took part along with Susan Goodenow, the team’s senior vice president of public affairs and marketing.

Epstein answered a few questions about the state of the Sox:

On the 2-9 start: "Any time you’re not winning games, there’s some concern. We don’t think it’s a representative sample of how we’re going to play. At a certain point you don’t want to dig a hole you can’t climb out of.”

The team's issues: "We have all the talent in the world. We just need to put it together. Our starting pitching has been a little bit better lately. That’s the most important ingredient. Getting a good starting pitching performance is the foundation and you go from there

"In the games we’ve gotten the good starting performances, those are the games we haven’t hit. That’s just the way things go when you’re in a slump. For the most part the bullpen has been good. The higher-leverage situations, we’ve pitched pretty well. We need to get some consistent starting pitching performances and hit up and down the lineup.”

On the changing lineups: “When guys hit well, it’s not hard. I don’t think the lineup is an issue. No matter where guys hit, it’s the quality of out at-bats as a team that’s an issue. If we have the kind of quality at-bats we’re capable of, you can pick the lineup out of a hat. It’s a matter of getting our good grinding approach. It’s early in the season and it takes guys a while to settle in. We’re not hitting yet like we while.”

On Daisuke Matsuzaka: "We work with every player every day trying to get better. Guys who are going good, you work to maintain. Guys who are struggling you work to find something. He’s pitching Monday. He needs to get better.”

5 or 6 games behind 1st place in April is not a big deal.  It would be a big deal in August.

To BlingBlang and other other posters with their heads up their
keisters....6 games behind with two weeks gone is a very big
deal. The Yanks just have better hitting than we do man for man
down the lineup. If you can't realize that, then watch another
sport, because you don't know "jack" about our national
pastime. They have a bandbox built for their team and all stars
right down the middle of their lineup.. legit hr hitters. Posada
hit one tonite, to win the game. They also have CC, AJ, Joba,
and enough live bodies to get them to the sixth innings with
their stellar relief. They are scoring 5 or 6 runs a game. That
    usually wins !!

That's brilliant, Theo. I thought you wanted to dig a hole and see if you can climb out of it. Just for kicks.

I have never heard a player say they like being bounced around a line-up, never. However, I have heard numerous players over the years state they like to know their spot, and do not want to arrive to each game wondering where they might hit.

Preparation is key to most successful major league players, and questioning your batting spot each morning does not help.  Superstition is not to be discounted either.

The Sox are only 5 games out of first.  No need to panic.  (just ignore the temporary fact that AJ Burnett has more wins..........)

Makes you wonder who the manager of this team. I could swear Theo makes all the line-up decisions and Francona is Charlie McCarthy (or Mortimer Snerd).

The upcoming road trip to the west coast will be telling.    If the starting pitching doesn't get out of it's fog, it's a rough road ahead after that.

Re: Epstein on the Red Sox: 'You don’t want to dig a hole you can’t climb out of'

He has already dug the hole. Why he signed Drew, Cameron, and
Lackey is very arguable...especially Cameron, who even the Mets
let slide. I watch Cameron at the plate and see very little to get
excited about. Ellsbury has about worn out his welcome. I'm sorry,
but he is no Brett Gardner. He has a lousy arm, and does not
know how to work a count. His three pitch K against Farnsworth
in the Tampa game in the 9th was a disgrace. And..it was lefty
against righty...supposedly in our favor.  We have some long ball
    threats...Papi and A Gon...but that's it.  Youk is just a guy who
hits gaps and looks for walks. After that...it's punch and judy, all
the way . We will not get to the playoffs with these guys, because
the pitching is decent, but we don't score runs and can't come from
behind in tight games, like the Yanks do with their lineup.
