addition by subtraction my friends... no wake, no lackey, and bard/aceves pitching a whole lot of innings and still having a good closer...plus a better conditioned beckett, a healed clay and later dice...unless lester falls off considerably, this pitching staff is already better....sorry babe -  i call bs on this
Posted by georom4
I never said I agree with the article or not.

But I don't agree with your "bard/aceves pitching a whole lot of innings" since that would be a major leap in innings load from the previous year as well as we don't know if either are a viable starter at this point.

It also is going to be different for bailey to be pitching in the ALE as opposed to the weak hitting - spacious ballparks - no pressure ALW.

How do we know that beckett is "better conditioned"? Have you been working out with him?

A "healed buch"? What's to say the injury won't reappear? Are you a back specialist?

And who really knows what you get from dice k. He hasn't had an ERA under 4.69 since his second season in beantowne.

There are plenty of question marks...........

Very true TBINFL but then who knows what the reasons were for the nightmare last September?  Isn't it all just blind speculation as you just said? We are all just BSing.
In Response to Re: ESPN Report: Sox Shallow Staff A Problem : So, you doubt the W-Sox would make this trade, yet you project him as part of the rotation, claiming you as a result have a solid #5. Your premise/rebuttal (this time, usually you're reasonable) is far fetched/wishful.
Posted by nhsteven
I said I doubt the deal will be made. I never projected him as part of the rotation. I showed what our staff depth would look like if the trade was made.

My priginal statement was that with Floyd as the 4th starter, our staff would be solid from top to bottom. Maybe "solid" is a bit too optimistic for Doubront as the 5th man, but I do indeed think he has a good chance of doing better than most teams' 5th starter this year. If not, perhaps we can get one of the project pitchers to do well enough to be called "solid" or semi-solid.

Getting Floyd as a starter would certainly make our rotation more solid (even if he replaces Bard). Bard in the pen radically changes the depth and solidity of our bullpen.

I'm willing to give more for Floyd than many here. I never said it would be enough for the White Sox to accept. I'm not the GM and don't pretend to be smarter than Ben or the White Sox GM. This is a discussion forum, and I happen to think Floyd (or someone else on a team looking to cut salary) could be obtained. I like our prospects, but think Cecchini and Bogaerts can replace Youk, which makes Middlebrooks expendable. I know I'm in the minority on trading Salty, and I hope he proves me to be horribly wrong, but I think his stock is higher now than when we got him and it may never be higher, since he has 2 years of team control remaining.

Yes , but everybody knows that you never have enough pitching but the Sox have cheaped out and are not willing to pay or trade for a good #4 who can eat up innings. Everybody knows what they need but the FO isn't willing to cooperate. If I was BH or BV, I would tell the FO to pay up or see you later.

I was pleased with how Bard performed tonight. Did anyone else watch the game and the interview with Bard later? Am I being unrealistic in my optimism or am I just a homer?

Re: ESPN Report: Sox Shallow Staff A Problem

Melencon and Bailey have yet to prove they can handle the teams we play on a consistent basis and Bard is also a question mark.  Aceves as a starter makes us weak in the pen.  Lackey and Wake had to go but we still have yet to improve our staff in my opinion anyway.

I can understand anyone who thinks Bailey & Melancon will not match Papelbon, but I think the rest of the staff will more than make-up for that possible loss.

I'm trying to be objective, but this is how I break it down:

The Pen:
Replace       IP    ERA/WHIP
Papelbon   64.1   2.94/0.933
Bard           73.0   3.33/.0959
with
Bailey         60
Melancon   80

Probable big advantgae 2011.

Replace
Wheeler      49.1   4.38/1.115
Jenks          15.2   6.32/2.234
Okajima       8.1   4.32/1.440
Williams      8.1    6.48/1.800
Hottovy        4.0    6.75/1.750
T.Miller        2.0    0.00/0.000
D.Reyes       1.2  16.20/2.400
DMac           1.0  18.00/3.000
with
90 more innings from Morales, Bowden or Tazawa.
Advantage 2012, but debatable.

(If Bard remained in the pen, I'd see a huge advantage of the 2012 pen over the 2011 pen top to bottom combined.)

The starters:
replace
Lackey  28 starts  160IP   6.41/1.619
with 28 starts from Bard
Huge advantage 2012

replace
Wakefield  23 starts 154.2 IP  5.12/1.358
and
Miller   12 starts  65 IP  5.54/1.815
and
Weiland   5 starts  24.2 IP  7.66/1.662
with
40 (more) starts from Buchholtz (maybe 18 more starts), Dice-K (maybe 10 more starts), and maybe 12 more starts from:
Aceves, Padilla, Cook, Miller or others
Advantage 2012.

It's not a slam dunk, but our staff is better now than last year.
