Exactly when did the Red Sox season end?

A lot of folks are saying the Red Sox season is now over, given the 4-1 loss to the Yanks last night. Others are saying that it was over a long time ago. Still others are saying that there are still 40 games to go, and it ain't over 'til it's over. (That's the camp I'm in, though it's getting harder to envision any kind of credible comeback scenario at this stage.)

So, which is it? Is the Sox season irretrievably lost? And if so, what was the specific point when that happened?

Re: Exactly when did the Red Sox season end?

Any team can go on a prolonged hot streak.  Boston scores enough runs and has enought pieces to do so.  Baltimore, a team whose differential between runs scored and runs allowed is more indicative of being well out of the playoff hunt to this point of the season, may fall to earth anytime now.  With two wild card spots, multiple scenarios should continue to provide hope to Boston faithful.

However, in deference to the theme of your post, if Boston fans are searching for a scapegoat, look no further than kimsaysthis.  If one reviews this poster's arrival and activity, at first glance it appears to coincide with last season's collapse and has carried over to this season.  In short, KST is a Boston Red Sox fan jinx, and all Yankee fans should be grateful.

The extra inning loss (to complete the Sweep) vs the O's in Baltimore (first week in May or so) - the game when the position players pitched.....I said it then and I'll remind you again now:  After that game it was really time to focus on 2013........

As Francona said last night, we play until they make us go home.

He and Orel both sounded a little surprised that Carl is opting for surgery now while the Sox are still not mathematically eliminated, not that they had all the medical facts.   But their point was, if you still have a chance, no matter how slim, you don't give up.

Incredible. Kimmi, this season is OVER. If Crawford didn't get his procedure done until the Red Sox are mathmatically eliminated there is a good chance he won't be ready to start NEXT season. Figures you would "support" Francona here. Its an opinion that is illogical and overly pollyanna.

The season isn't over - there are still games left to be played.  You are confusing "baseball season" with "playoff run" - the real question is not "Is the season over?" but "Is the Sox chance for a playoff spot over?"

Cause there are still baseball games to be played.

Obviously there are still games left to be played. I think most people here realize that the season "being over" refers only to our playoff chances.

Re: Exactly when did the Red Sox season end?

I say it was when Valentine ripped Youkilis back in spring training.

At that time the players all had to have lost total respect for their manager.

Lots of posters say that a manager is not that important or that professional players should be able to play no matter what, but good performance stems from respect of the man in charge.  You don't hae to like him, but you have to respect him.

If Valentine had only called Youkilis into his office to tell him in person what he told that reporter, the entire season may have been saved.  Valentine had every right to believe what he said, but he just needed to voice his opinion behind closed doors.  Every manager and coach knows not to rip players in public when it can be handled much better in private.

After that incident, the entire team could not trust Valentine and I do not blame any one of the players for that feeling.

Of course, Valentine's sarcastic comments later on never helped either.
