When Ellsbury is AARP age like Varitek and Wakefield, then he's past it too.

Varitek will likely cost $1-1.5M not $2M.
He caught more innings as a backup than all but 2 team's back-up catchers.

1 to 1.5M is a waste of money for a player who, as a backup, is the only back-up catcher who has been unable to finish the last two seasons.

The past winter problem has been most Red Sox fans aren't vocal in forcing out good ole boy Varitek. Pretty clear that an overwhelming majority of Red Sox fans finally realize that Varitek is washed up and unable to finish a season, even as a backup 33% of a season back bencher.

Varitek is already on his knees begging for a FA contract. Not one single team in MLB is going to give him anything but a minor league tryout for activer roster contract. It is very sad that Varitek is so delusional as to think he can return to his career frathouse for been and video games.

Varitek should have retired years ago. He will most surely will refuse to turn down arbitration, so he cannot be offered arbitration. Varitek is going to have to be kicked to the curb because of his own hubris.

Red Sox need to sign Hernandez as the new catcher so Varitek will see the writing on the wall. If Varitek tries to go elsewhere on a minor league contract, he will not last another season because he hasnt been able to finish one in 3 years.

Red Sox fans have made it clear that they do not want Varitek back. And why would any team want a player who can't even finish a season as a backup catcher.

Keep telling The Big Lie softie (henceforth known as ZC - Zero Credibility), and sooner or later people will start to believe it.

Heck, I remember when you had led some of your misguided followers into believing that the Sox should get rid of Ells.

Your assertion that most fans want him gone based on the postings on one website where maybe 100 people post with any regularity is at best ridiculous and and worst, assinine.    -sic

Regardless, do you think it's a good move bringing him back? They have Salty, probably Lavarnway, and they can get a younger (not 40) alternative as back up who can throw out an occasional runner.

And how do you bring him back with the 'C' on his chest?  Do you say, 'Jason, we'll take you back at cheap money, but we need to strip the 'C' off your chest?" The easiest way to avoid that is to just say Bye-Bye.

Do you really think 15 more SBs vs VTek due to his poor CS% is worth more than the fact that he...

    1) Hit better than 44 out of the top 60 MLB catchers by PAs last year? (Better than 22 team catcher OPS?)

    2) Gets better results from almost every pitcher he catches than Salty did, than VMart did, than Kottaras did, and on and on... (Some way way better)?

    3) Helps the team win more than our other catcher year after year after year, for whatever reason?

This CS% argument is just a small part of a catchers game. We're talking about maybe 12-24 more SBs.

Re: Fan former Red Sox Player FA Referendum #1: Jason Varitek? A: Overwhelming Majority of Red Sox Fans Want Varitek to Stay ...

Varitek was Beckett's personal catcher for most of the last 2 years. He has averages less than 33% of the final two seasons, but still has been unable to finish the season off the shelf.

What is insane is the notion that he should once again be given a seat in the frat house. No doubt that overwhelming majority of Red Sox fans want this guy gone, as watching him scratch at the end of the season and say nothing during record collapse is hardly worth 1 to 2Million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Cherington doesn't close fast on Hernandez at 3 to 4M year 1 and player option year 2 @ 3 to 4M team buyout for 2M. If market is there, dubuious, Cherington should go agead and guarantee the 2nd year.

Catcher for 2012 should be this:

    Hernandez starter
Spring training winner Salty or Lavarway as backup/ loser as AAA call-up depth

Hernandez fits perfectly in getting a solid and capable veteran starter catcher for one or two years to allow Salty and Lavarway to playout and see if either is long term Red Sox future starting catcher material. Salty looks no more than maybe, and Lavarway is simply without any sample size so he will need to get more reps.

Epstein should offer 2 million for Varitek, just like he did to the Red Sox.

    I agree.

Theo Epstein should take Varitek and his lapdog (Wakefield) with him to Chicago. Would it be too much to ask Theo for an even swap...Soriano for Crawford straight up?
