its a good thing the name attached to this quote wasnt valentine...because then folks on bdc wouldnt be so forgiving,  hypocrisy much?

Tito was a class act who had unprecedented success as a Sox manager for an 8 year period, while the egomaniacal Valentine guided the Sox to their worst season in nearly 50 years, while alienating pretty much everyone he came in contact with. So yeah, Francona has a bit more credibility when it comes to discussing the antics of the Sox Front Office.

You can't pin this all on BV. He was undermined by management and the Sox were still in contention before they decided to blow up the team.

Maybe you can't pin it all on BV but saying they were 'still in contention' is pretty funny.  They were 7 games under .500 in late August.  Granted the new wild card format gave them a small mathematical chance, but realistically they were dead and buried.

He was undermined by management because he made it clear as early as ST that he wasn't fit for the job.

The fact that the FO screwed up royally by hiring him, doesn't make BV a better manager.

They may have had a chance at turning things around sometime in July, but by the time of the "Big Trade" on the 25th they had already dropped 15 of 22 in August. The season was pretty much down the drain by that point...the trade just accelerated the free-fall.

Gee a gilted coach writes a book about a franchise which fired him.  The co-author is a writer who no one listens to any longer.

No doubt this ownership is concerned about making money, who isn't? In order to pay salaries, ratings have to be up. Terry knew this when hired, and the key to him gettting hired was his abiltiy to talk to the media and project himself well in front of the cameras.  One of the reasons Bobby V got hired was that the ownership thought it was a no brainer that he could handle the Boston press.  When it was obvious Bobby could not handle the press and was a disaster in front of the cameras, his time was numbered.

excellent post...and valentine really was undermined by ben in many ways while he was managing...but he got hush money so who knows what he wouldve said if he were unmuzzled....i just think Francona didnt need to go there - it hurts his rep....i didnt like him as manager but he was a decent human being and seemed above pettiness

    In response to Softlaw1's comment:

Tito is about as petty as it gets, just to make a buck. He was paid to do the job, with those players from 2009, 2010 and 2011, and he failed. He needs to move on and be happy with the fortune he was paid. Forget the little petty book sale for more money.

Schilling earned every penny of his 8M golden parachute. He was the player leader of 2004 and 2007, and players in the union must have player leaders to do the job. The Red Sox currently have no veteran leader who will make them accountable.

Here is what just comes down Bob Kraft is one of the greatest owner pro sports. You think he would tell a coach to win more excitingly? Pete Carroll was just terrible and Bill Parcells asked him to sell the team yet both of these man speak highly of Kraft and Kraft does the same. Why because he is a good owner. You really have question if the Red Sox owners are gpod owners.

Players get payed on projected expected performance. Schilling didn't earn a penny of that $8 mil. That was a situation where Schilling and the medical staff screwed up on being candid.

t least Curt gave us banners, what about John Smoltz abso fleecing Theo with that crazy contract that paid him about 10 mil for starting 6 games and pitching lousy...and then he bad mouthed the sox....

    they delivered championship baseball

No, "they" did not deliver championship baseball.

Okay, we've heard from Soflaw that delivering World Series Championships does not qualify as delivering championships.

You can't blame it all on Valentine, but a simple acknowledgement that Valentine was the worst manager in BB this year would suffice.  He couldn't have won with all the injuries, but he was the worst manager in dealing with the media, the worst manager in dealing with the clubhouse, and the worst tactical manager in BB.
