Please....any manager would have left his closer in long enough to blow that.  If he can't turn it around he losses the position, Farrell did nothing wrong tonight....they blew it.  You got to take the good with the bad, tonight was bad.

Welcome back home old Red Sox. We've missed you....

AMEN!  Hanrahan is the second coming of Paps.  He IS NOT a quality closer now-a-days.  Hanahan hasn't had a clean close yet and tonight was obviously the worst.  What a momentum stopper thanks to Victorino, Bradley, and our "closer" Hanrahan.  Yea, I know that's baseball.  Still a BIG TIME PITS.  Hold on to your hats.  Here starts the BIG slide.  go soxs!Cry

Very possiblly. And yes, the crappy D early that cost runs sort of cost the game. Just like runs in the early innings count, so do losses in April. This is a bad one, and will count big. Aceves tommorow. Haha, good luck with that. Night all....

Sure guys...when the pitching stinks you blame the officiating. No more excuses. If the pitching stinks, say it stinks.

I agree. Three guys to blame was Hanrahan, Salty's defense, and the umpire. Then you look at the defense in the OF. Then the lack of hitting -Salty. You don't pull your closer before he has blown his first game.

Does it seem like we can't get a closer to close consistently since Paps left?  We've brought in 3 closers and ruined a closer in waiting.  Next time lets just promote from within.  I'm not saying im giving up on hammered yet, but I'm just saying.....if he doesn't turn it around let's see what Tazawa can do.

Two outs, two strikes, two pitches on the black called balls.  They was robbed.

Agreed. Nothing wrong in leaving him in there. He just didnt have it tonight, but could just as easily have struck Machado out. No way to know that unless you let him pitch. The real question is, will he move on or become a head case?

IMO I think the Sox have Bailey pegged as the closer if he continues to pitch well and if Hanrahan can't hold the job.

This was a very tough loss no doubt, but at this point, we just have to hope the Sox can win tomorrow and still take the series.

Aceves may not be great, but Tillman isn't so great himself...

One good thing about following the Reds in addition to the Sox is watching Aroldis Chapman. If you dont watch him regularly, its hard to describe. Its not that he cant ever blow a save, but watching him, hitters are just helpless most of the time. If someone even makes contact its different, if they hit it hard its a matter of comment, if they get a hit its surpising, and if they score you stop the presses. If he blows the save you pass out onto the livingroom floor.

Exactly it's all about winning series.  If we come back and win tomorrow the we have won the first three series against the Yankees, Blue Jays and the Orioles.....not too shabby

Yep. Going 3-0 in your first three series (all against division rivals) is a very good way to start the season.

True. However, recent history of this team tells us they lose tommorow, and Hanrahan blows another save like this next week leading to a closer controversy. We will learn a lot about this team in 24 hours.

Someone please tell me Farrell is a better manager than Francona.  And that he gave the cameras feedback and a gameplan for the future.

    In response to mryazz's comment:

he learned that from his mentor, 'cona.

Re: Game 8 Thread: Orioles @ Red Sox

i would say farrell is just as much at fault as hanrahan, he clearly didnt have it tonight and quite honestly has been shaky to date, and imploded on the mound. The thing is, he should not have been left in that long, closer or not. i mean the guy allowed a lead off homer, then a single, walked 2, then a wild pitch and then another homer to machado of all people. he should have be yanked after he walked the bases loaded, at that point the sox still had the lead by 1 and there was 2 out. there is no excuse for leaving him in that long, hes not mariano rivera, pulling him was the right call without question, its stupid decisions like this that cost the sox games and will haunt us later in the year. quite honestly i wouldnt be opposed to making bailey the closer and putting hanrahan as a set up guy. bailey is pitching better and is our future close anyways.
