Ortiz could have bunted that down third base for a hit. He looked bad on that series.

He has looked bad for awhile now... he cant even catch up to fastballs down the middle...you can see it in his face that he is in a funk...

I was thinking the same thing especially since Ortiz is 1 for 18 against the guy with 10 strikeouts... no way Farrell has the balls to do that though.

Age is catching up with him at this stage of the season. He looked terrible on that last at bat. The third baseman was halfway between short and third base. Farrell should have had him bunting, thats where they should have played small ball.

No no john, we r home team, we play to tie...you cant throw games away... Games lost by one run are chrged to manager ( walt Alston)

Seriously, how do you look at that last pitch and leave your bat on your shoulder... oh well, the bats were pretty silent tonight... getting nothing at all from Papi which really hurts this lineup...

What a shame.  A very winnable game.  Either Ortiz comes ouI off this slump or he needs to watch from the dugout.

Thats Saltalamachia, strikeout machine. Thats a game where you give up 3 runs and you should win it.

i think the real question is why the f is gomes starting with a righty on the mound? and even more so, after nava singled to start the 9th, why did farrell not pinch hit napoli or carp for him? no way should gomes be hitting in that situation. gomes is hitting .232 on the season and is a career .225 hitter against right handed pitchers. down right bone headed and inexcusable. we need to win games, especially given that the rays lost today which makes getting the win that much more important.

Carp was unavailable and hurt. Someone should have pinch hit for Papi against Matusz, but that would mean that Farrell had some pelotas.

Carp was a late scratch...shoulder is bothering him. He was in the original line-up. Gomes has come up with some ninth inning walk off heroics. I guess if napoli pinch hit and he struck out we would all be questioning that.

Re: Game Thread 135: Orioles at Red Sox

Carp had the game winning pinch hit single last night. Tonight , he was not able to play against a right hander. Not even able to pinch hit in the 9th.  All we are told is that he has a shoulder issue. Is there any further word on how this happened ? Someone has to ask these questions. I guess it has to be me.

    Stabbed by Foulke.

Re: Game Thread 135: Orioles at Red Sox

My issue with the 9th inning is after Nava leads off with his squib single how come we don't sacrifice him over into scoring position, so that a single ties the game? Or didn't we just trade Mortenson for a speedster who could steal a base a la Dave Roberts? With Papi in a slump maybe we ought to be thinking about playing a bit more small ball, especially in close games against tough pitchers.
