Not good news at all. He does tend to get injured a lot, doesn't he. We will need him for the playoffs and with a 7 1/2 game lead he should take his time off now so he can be ready to play in October.

Probably a couple of days off. He'll be back. Nice to have this luxury, to bring kids up in the middle of a Pennant race see how they do. Yanks are still fighting hard to make Play-offs, they wont be quitting.

For the most part Ellsbury has injured twice.  If he misses significant time this time around we can talk....but I'm hopeful he will be back in the lineup in a few days

I'd almost like to see the yankees overtake Tampa for the second wildcard spot. I guess the sox can play a big part in that with two more against the yankees and tampa up next.

    Scott Lauber/Boston Herald

Injury stems from Aug. 28 when Ellsbury fouled pitch off foot. X-ray that day was negative. Aggravated it on stolen base Thurs night

I see hes your new whipping boy now that Lester has turned things around. Besides his 2 oddball collisions, hes been durable. You act as if he gets a hammy or a back tweak every month. No GM in MLB looks at Ells as a PT player. Not one.

Just stating the facts. The bottom line, regardless of the mechanism of his many injuries, is that he DOES miss a lot of games due to injury. When he plays, he is very good, but he doesn't play as many games as he should. Perhaps his body is fragile; maybe he plays a reckless style of ball; maybe in this instance he should have worn better protection on his foot. Whatever the reasons are, he DOES miss a lot of games. And that has to be addressed. The time to address it is at contract time. No offer should be made to him that places the risks of his injuries upon the team. There needs to be multiple incentive clauses in any offer he gets from us.

NOthing wrong with facts.  Despite the reasons why Jacoby sat out, the red sox staff will use these facts when offerring him a contract.

Thats just good business. The Sox generally look at that kind of thing at contract time and insert incentive clauses. They did it, for example, with Lackey who had a history of elbow issues. They are doing it with Napoli as well. Ellsbury's problems are less specific but no less real: he DOES tend to miss a lot of games due to injuries, though he has made more of an effort to play hurt this year because his contract is coming up. Inasmuch as Ellsbury may not be taking proper precautions to prevent injuries (eg: reckless play, not wearing proper foot protection) he bears some of the responsibility for his injuries. I am confident that the Red Sox will make a fair and reasonable offer to him that will include the necessary incentive clauses. In the meantime, lets all hope he heals quickly this time. We do need him in the playoffs.
