Terrible at bat by Dustin. Bailing out badly against the side armer.  Have to stand in there.

Ist and 2nd , nobody out---- sac bunt is a bad play.

Its actually one of the few situations where statistically the bunt is a good choice.

Don't like it. Why give up an out?

Someone did an analysis that I read about it. Statistically, more runs are scored if you bunt in that situation. In almost no other situation, except if the pitcher is up in the NL, is a bunt likely to result in more runs. I can try to find that analysis..its pretty interesting.

Clay not looking too sharp. Got a break when Hafner just got under one , but he looks hittable at the moment.  Maybe the cold weather is bothering him.

While Pedey is one of the better two strike hitters, it still drives me crazy that he takes first pitch strikes down the middle (Ellsbury, too).

I would be curious if that stat is just for when the bunt is successful. Tonight , all it did was put Iglesias in a two strike hole.

Here is the link to the study I read. Its complicated and not precise, but the way I interpret it is that you do better bunting in terms of more runs being scored if runners are on first and second with nobody out or if the pitcher (or Iglesias) is up:

Last year the MLB batting average when hitting with two strikes was .175 ---- It is time to re-think the " work the count " strategy.   Sometimes you have to be aggressive. If nothing else , it keeps the pitcher honest.

If Iglesias stays at short , they will turn a lot more DPs than last year.

Thanks. I'll look at it when I get a chance.  To me , the bunt is meant to try and score one run. Swinging away , you should have a better chance to score multiple runs.

I admit that this time I did not look at it in detail. You might be right: it might be about scoring one run. I remember getting into a debate with either Breidy or Kimmy at Sawxheads about this and why Francona didn't use the bunt more often and I looked at it in detail then. Have at it!
